Africa

Through its unique capacities as the worlds premiere vehicle for

international cooperation, the UN system plays a crucial role in
coordinating assistance of all kinds to help Africa help itself.
From promoting the development of democratic institutions, to the
establishment of peace between warring nations, the UN is present
on the ground supporting economic and social development and the
promotion and protection of human rights.

Ageing

The worlds population is ageing: virtually every country in the world

is experiencing growth in the number and proportion of older
persons in their population.

Population ageing is poised to become one of the most significant

social transformations of the twenty-first century, with implications
for nearly all sectors of society, including labour and financial
markets, the demand for goods and services, such as housing,
transportation and social protection, as well as family structures and
intergenerational ties.

AIDS

In June 1981, scientists in the United States reported the first clinical
evidence of a disease that would later become known as acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS. Its cause, the human

immunodeficiency virus (HIV), was identified in 1983.

Since the start of the epidemic around 78 million (71 million87

million) have become infected with HIV and around 35 million (29.6
million40.8 million) people have died of AIDS-related illnesses. In
2015, there were 36.7 million (34.0 million39.8 million) people living
with HIV.
HIV is found in the bodily fluids of a person who has been infected -
blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk. It can be transmitted
through unprotected sexual contact. It is also spread among people
who inject drugs with non-sterile injecting needles, as well as
through unscreened blood products. It can spread from mother to
child during pregnancy, childbirth or breast feeding when the mother
is HIV-positive.
Ms. Amina J. Mohammed
She was the Minister of Environment of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria from November 2015 to December 2016, where she steered
the countrys efforts on climate action, protecting the natural
environment and conserving resources for sustainable development.
Prior to this, she served as Special Adviser to Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon on Post-2015 Development Planning, where she was
instrumental in bringing about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals.
ANNAN, KOFI A.
of Ghana , the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations,
served from 1997 to 2006 and was the first to emerge from the
ranks of United Nations staff. One of Mr. Annan's main priorities
as Secretary-General was a comprehensive programme of
reform aimed at revitalizing the United Nations and making the
international system more effective. He was a constant advocate
for human rights, the rule of law, the Millennium Development
Goals and Africa , and sought to bring the Organization closer to
the global public by forging ties with civil society, the private
sector and other partners.
Antnio Guterres
the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations, took office on
1st January 2017.Having witnessed the suffering of the most
vulnerable people on earth, in refugee camps and in war zones,
the Secretary-General is determined to make human dignity the
core of his work, and to serve as a peace broker, a bridge-
builder and a promoter of reform and innovation.
Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro
of Tanzania took office as Deputy Secretary-General of the
United Nations on 1 February 2007. She is the third Deputy
Secretary-General to be appointed since the post was
established in 1997.
Dr. Migiro served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International
Cooperation from 2006-2007 -- the first woman in the United
Republic of Tanzania to hold that position since its
independence in 1961. Before that, she was Minister for
Community Development, Gender and Children for five years.As
Foreign Minister, Dr. Migiro spearheaded Tanzania 's
engagement in the pursuit of peace, security and development in
the Great Lakes Region. She served as Chair of the Council of
Ministers' meetings of the International Conference of the Great
Lakes Region, a process that culminated into a Pact on Security, materials concerning the jurisprudence of international courts

Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjld
was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 10 April 1953 until
18 September 1961 when he met his death in a plane accident while
on a peace mission in the Congo. He was born on 29 July 1905 in
Jonkoping in south-central Sweden. The fourth son of Hjalmar
Hammarskjld, Prime Minister of Sweden during the years of World
War I, and his wife Agnes, M.C. (b. Almquist), he was brought up in
the university town of Uppsala where his father resided as Governor
of the county of Uppland.

The term human rights was mentioned seven times in the UN's

was appointed Secretary-General of the United Nations for a
five-year term beginning on 1 January 1972. The Security
Council had recommended the appointment on 21 December
1971 and the General Assembly approved it by acclamation
on the following day. The Secretary-General was born at
Sankt Andra-Wordern, near Vienna, Austria, on 21 December
1918. He graduated from the University of Vienna as a
Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1944. He is also a graduate of the
Vienna Consular Academy.

Trygve Halvdan Lie
was born on 16 July 1896, in Oslo, Norway, the son of Martin and
Hulda Arnesen Lie. He was educated at Oslo University where he
obtained a law degree in 1919. On 8 November 1921, he married
Hjordis Joergensen. They had three children - Sissel, Guri and
Mette.Mr. Lie became a member of the Norwegian Labor Party
Youth Organization in 1911. He was an assistant to the secretary
