Is an input device used to point and select objects on the
screen
Moving it causes a corresponding movement of the
pointer on the screen

NIIT Know your PC /Lesson 1 /Slide 3 of 33

PC Peripherals
Mouse (contd..)
Parameters for classification are:
Number of buttons
may have one, two or three
use of buttons is determined by the software that uses the

PC Peripherals
Mouse (contd..)
Technology used
Mechanical mouse
has a small ball protruding through the bottom which rotates as
the mouse is moved on a surface
switches inside the mouse detect the movement and inform the
computer
Examples: Microsoft, IBM and Logitech mice
Optical mouse

PC Peripherals
Mouse (contd..)
Some categories of mouse are:
Trackball Mouse:
In a Trackball mouse, the ball is rolled at one place with the
thumb, fingers and palms rather than rolling the mouse on
the table top.
Joysticks Mouse
A Joystick usually includes two upright sticks which are
moved with the hand and a button is pressed on either stick.
Light Pen Mouse
A light pen utilizes a light-sensitive detector, requiring you to
hold a pen and point it at the screen.

PC Peripherals
Mouse (contd..)
Some categories of mouse are:
Wireless Mouse
The wireless mouse is a mouse without a cable. This mouse
works up to one and a half metres away from the computer.
Touch Pad Mouse
A touchpad is a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is
sensitive to pressure and motion.

PC Peripherals
Touch Screen
Is an input device
User can touch the screen to select an option
Is used in information-providing applications
Example: airline reservation counters, stock exchanges
Technology used
Screen is lined with LEDs vertically and photodetectors
horizontally. When the finger breaks the light beam, the
photodetectors detect the position
Since there is no keyboard, the person querying cannot tamper
with the data

Is used for drawing figures directly on the screen and
moving the figures around
Example: a CAD application
Has a photodetector at its tip
Records the change in the brightness of the screen when pointed at
a particular point
Is useful in menu-based applications as a substitute for keyboard
and mouse

PC Peripherals
Printer
Is an output device
There are two main types of printers:
Impact
characters are printed by pressing a typeface against an
inked ribbon, which makes a mark on the paper. The most
commonly-used impact printer is the Dot Matrix Printer.
The other types of impact printers are drum printers, daisy
wheel printers and golf ball printers, line printers, Braille
printers. However, these printers are not as popular as Dot
Matrix Printer.
Epson LQ-2180 Dot Matrix, Panasonic KX-P1150, HP
LP500,, Lexmark Forms Printer 2480, Brother M 4318 are the
examples of DMPs
NIIT Know your PC /Lesson 1 /Slide 13 of 33
PC Peripherals
Printer (Contd..)
Non-Impact
There is no contact between the typeface and the paper
while printing.
The main types of non-impact printer are:
Laser printers
Inkjet printer
Thermal printer

Type of Interface
Serial
Receives one character at a time for printing
Parallel
Receives eight characters at a time for printing

NIIT Know your PC /Lesson 1 /Slide 16 of 33

PC Peripherals
Plotter
Is an output device
Used to create presentation visuals, engineering drawings and
other high-quality visuals
Can be:
Flat-bed
paper is stationary while the pens and the arms move
Drum
paper is wrapped over a drum which rotates while the
pen moves laterally
Is connected to the parallel port

PC Peripherals
Storage Media
Data needs to be stored for later use on storage media.
Some categories of Storage media are:
Cartridge tape
CD-ROM
Magneto-optical disks.

NIIT Know your PC /Lesson 1 /Slide 19 of 33

PC Peripherals
Storage Media (Contd..)
Cartridge Tape
Is made up of plastic films, coated with
magnetic material
Stores data sequentially
Offers high storage capacities at relatively low costs
Is ideal as a backup medium
Is not recommended in cases where data is required at random
and at high speeds
Requires a cartridge tape drive to read and write on the tape

NIIT Know your PC /Lesson 1 /Slide 20 of 33

PC Peripherals
Storage Media (Contd..)
CD-ROM
CD-ROM
Is a storage device
