3. An automotive plate clutch consists of two pairs of contacting surfaces with an asbestos
friction lining. The torque transmitting capacity of the clutch is 550 N-m. The coefficient of

friction is 0.25 and the permissible intensity of pressure is 0.35N/mm 2. Due to the space
limitations, the outer diameter of the friction disk is fixed as 250 mm.Using uniform wear theory,

(i).The inner diameter of the friction disk and

(ii).The spring force required to keep the clutch in an engaged position.

4. Design a 12 speed gear box for a lathe. The minimum and maximum speeds are 100 and 1200
rpm. Power is 5 kW from 1440 rpm induction motor.

5. A cone clutch with asbestos friction lining transmits 30kW power at 500 rpm. The coefficient
of friction is 0.2 and the permissible intensity of pressure is 0.35 N/mm2. The semi cone angle is
12.5. The outer diameter is fixed as 300 mm from space limitations. Assuming uniform wear
theories calculate:

(i).The inner diameter


(ii).The face width of the friction lining.
(iii).The force required to engage the clutch.

6. A multiplate clutch with both sides effective transmits 30 kW at 360 rpm. Inner and outer
diameters of clutch are 200 mm and 400 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction is 0.25.
An axial load of 600 N is applied. Assuming uniform wear criterions, find the number number of
discs required and the maximum intensity of pressure developed.
