ABSTRACT

Even though there is no established date for the appearance of Logistics, it is

believed by some authors that since the building of the pyramids, logistical
activities were already existent. Over time, logistics began to earn its space,
and around 1970, logistics began to gain great strength and importance among
companies. Along with the pressure for good results and cost reduction, a great
competitiveness between these companies thus begins. Motivated by
competitiveness, organizations began to look for distinguishing factors which
would add value in their logistical operations in order improve services provided.
In an increasingly demanding market, a combination between logistics and
information technology (IT) emerged at the beginning of the 90s, and logistics
professionals began to stand out by using this technology in managing
activities, such as transportation and storage. Driven by the importance of
information technology in the current logistical market, this work is based on an
analysis of the warehouse sector of a Logistics operator and from this, we aim
to present a draft for improvement in the management of container storage
through information technology using the Warehouse Management System
(WMS) as its main tool. The use of a system such as WMS offers the company
improvements to the accuracy of the information processed, reduction of
mobilization time between operations, improvement in physical space used, and
error reduction among others some other things which will also be discussed.
With these improvements the company thus gets a distinguishing factor in its
activities within the supply chain sector. With this essay, we expected to draft a
proposition for WMS implementation, making understandable the importance of
this tool and its benefits for the improvement in the storage management of the
containers of the company object of study of this work.
