Part B Legislation
Fire safety legislation can be confusing but its essential that
its adhered to as not following this legislation can cost lives.
The Building Regulations Part B is split into two different
volumes which focus on fire safety: Volume 1 covers
dwelling houses and Volume 2 covers all other buildings.
Part B assesses the reaction to fire and fire resistance.
Elements such as heat emission, ignitability, toxic gas and
smoke emission are caused by the reaction to fire. Fire
resistance and firestopping deal with the ability of a material
to withstand fire exposure. SIG Technical Insulation specialise
in supplying fire resistance and firestopping products which
comply with Part B after the following assessments:
Stability load-bearing capability and structural collapse
Integrity flame puncture
Fire insulation heat transfer
Fire resistance covers a number of categories including protection
of building structure; service protection; penetration seals
and large barriers; and linear fire-stops and cavity barriers.
Fire resistance and firestopping which adheres to
Part B will ultimately save lives as it achieves:
Safe evacuation of the building
Time for the emergency services to fight fires safely and
efficiently
Reduced losses to property, rebuilding costs and business
down-time
Fire containment in cells or compartments to slow the
spread of fire
All the products which SIG Technical Insulation supplies comply
with Part B legislation and our team are experts in this.

If any data is being used for structural calculations contact Firemac to ensure the relevant data is up-to-date.
Firemac FM Blue has been installed across a range of industrial and commercial builds including transport and infrastructure projects, power
stations, office blocks, communication and asset protection.
Firemac FM Blue is distributed solely through SIG and is supported by a full range of test evidence and assessments including BS 476: Parts
20, 22 and 24, BS EN 1364 - Parts 1 and 2, and UL263. In addition, the board is produced under a Third Party Certification scheme. Full
details are available upon request.
For installers full training in the installation of Firemac FM Blue will be given, alongside ongoing site inspections and comprehensive
technical support.
Building regulations stipulate the period of fire resistance required for any element of building structure. Beams and columns require at
least the same standard of fire protection as that required by any element they support.
The temperature rise of structural steelwork under fire test conditions provides a method of computing fire protection thicknesses based
on accepted empirical formulae. The rate of increase in temperature of a steel cross section is determined by the ratio of the heated
surface area (A) to the volume (V).
This ratio (A/V) has units of m-1 and is known as the section factor.
The section factor is a measure of the rate at which a steel element will increase in temperature. The higher the value of the section
factor, the faster the element will heat up and therefore the thicker fire protection required to satisfy a stipulated fire protection period.
How to Specify
Promat VERMICULUX (up to 240 minutes A/V 17 260m-1)
Promat VERMICULUX is a lightweight non-combustible board specially designed to provide fire protection to structural steelwork. Up to
240 minutes fire resistance can be achieved depending on thickness of material used and the dimensions of the beam or column being
protected. Promat VERMICULUX can be installed prior to the building being weather tight.
Glasroc F FIRECASE
Used predominantly as part of the British Gypsum FireCase and GypLyner encase structural steel encasement system, giving up to 180
minutes fire protection.
It has a high quality, white smooth surface finish, ideally suited as a self finish or to receive direct decoration with most paint finishes.
Can also be tiled and plastered directly.
Staple fixes (up to 25mm) or screw fixed
3 or 4 sided protection
Steel angles or solders
GypLyner encase with FireLine is also available

Fire Barrier systems help to prevent fire and smoke spread within
roof and ceiling voids for all general conditions encountered on
site.
The vertically hung Fire Barriers are capable of achieving both
integrity and insulation protection periods from 15 to 120
minutes, and the friction fitted Fire Barrier Slab will also provide
60 minutes integrity and insulation.
Acoustic performance
The correct use of Fire Barrier within structural cavities and voids will reduce the level of transmitted sound
FIREHALT
FIREHALT has bought two new products to the lightweight fire
barrier/fire curtain market that are exclusively available through
your local branch of SIG. These are:
Firehalt SF90
Product Description
SF90 is an ultra-lightweight fabric smoke and flame curtain that
is totally non combustable and has a full 90 min fire rating when
tested to BS476 p20/22.
Installation
Supplied in handy sized rolls 120cm wide by 25m long which
like all the other FIREHALT products utilises standard fixing
components that are inexpensive and readily available. 12mm
metal staples are used to join panels together vertically and
horizontally.
Firehalt 30/30
Product Description
To help you cope with an increasingly competitive market
FIREHALT has developed a lightweight fire rated cavity barrier that
still offers a full 30 mins Insulation value when tested to BS476
p20/22.
Installation
Each pack weighs little more than 16kg but provides 8.4sqm
of product. In line with other products in the range it is quick
to install using standard components such as 50mm stud and
25mm metal angle, and can be fixed from one side.
Brush seal
Introducing BRUSHSEAL - a unique product specifically designed to
be used in conjunction with Firehalt barriers and curtains.
Simple and quick to install
Will fit any size or shape of service penetration
Suitable for uneven surfaces such as cable trays
Requires no expensive mastics or adhesives
Provides a neat & professional finish
Brushseal is fixed to the penetration service rather than the barrier
and is therefore straightforward and quick to fit. System will also
add stability to the barrier.
General benefits:
Easy to cut and install
Ensures site tolerances are accommodated
Independently tested to provide 2 hours of fire resistance
Resists the passage of smoke aluminium foil
Faced on both sides
Suitable for cavity widths up to 400mm
Easy site storage and handling
Quality assured to BS EN ISO 9001
Slabs are designed to be cut on-site, to produce cavity fire stops of 1000mm length and in widths to suit individual cavity sizes.
Fixing Brackets are required for the installation. They are supplied in two standard types, Small Fixing Brackets designed for cavities up
to, and including 100mm wide and Large Fixing Brackets for cavities over 100mm and up to 400mm wide.
Brackets are supplied in cardboard boxes, flat packed, and are designed to be easily re-profiled by hand on site. Fixing Brackets should be
cut on site as necessary to allow at least 75% penetration of the Firestop.
Masonry Wall
Masonry walls within the external fabric of a building are typically formed by an inner and outer masonry leaf which forms a void for
installation of a thermal insulation layer. Such situations will typically form a hidden cavity within the fabric of a building and potentially
form a ready route for spread of flame and smoke within this hidden void. In these instances it is necessary to install cavity barriers to
limit the spread of flame within this hidden void. It is imperative the selection of products are suited to the intended application and
proven to perform having undergone independent testing in line with current standards.
