Introduction
This lesson was developed because of a need for high school students to know and
understand the ethical use of Internet and computer technology. A lack of student
understanding of ethical use of Internet and computer technology has been observed
by educators, heads of business, and the communications media for several years. A
committee at our high school called the Goals Committee identified the necessity of
instructing students in ethical use of the Internet and computer technology resources.
Many instructors had complained that students were copying and pasting information
from the Internet and handing it in as their own work. Some students were also
wasting time playing games on the Internet or spending a lot of time in chat rooms.
The Goals Committee recommended that the students be required to learn about
ethical use of the Internet and computer resources, and that it should be taught along
with the current computer curriculum. The media has also reported the problems high
schools and universities have had with students handing in plagiarized work or papers
purchased over the Internet.
