Computation and Estimation Focus: Number Relationships and
Operations
2.5: The student will recall addition facts with sums to 20 or less
and the corresponding subtraction facts.
2.8: The student will create and solve one- and two-step
addition and subtraction problems, using data from simple
tables, picture graphs, and bar graphs.
Patterns, Functions, and Algebra Focus: Patterning and
Numerical Sentences
2.21: The student will solve problems by completing numerical
sentences involving the basic facts for addition and subtraction.
The student will create story problems, using the numerical
sentences.
The objective of this lesson is for students to become familiar
with adding and subtracting simple numbers using bar graphs
and word problems also. The teacher will first go over basic
math problems such as adding and subtracting and review how
you make a bar graph. The students will then be able to use
SMART Notebook lesson when solving these problems. First, I
will split up the students into small groups so they can work
together. They will count how many red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, and purple gumballs there are on the screen. They will
write down how many of each number of gumballs there are
then graph the number of different colored gumballs into a bar
graph. They will then figure out which color has the most
gumballs. Next, students will begin math word problems. They
will read the question and separate the different color gumballs
with how many they say in the different boxes. The students will
then figure out the word problems by separating the gumballs
to see how many they end up with. There will be multiple
addition and subtraction word problems to help the students
become familiar word problems. After, the students will have a
chance to make their own word problems within their small
groups. They can state the word problems then have other
groups figure out the answers by pulling the gumballs aside
 according to the question. If the students need any help they
can ask their peers or ask the teacher.
