Tutorial 5 Date 6/9/2013 Topic covered: Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams

1. Draw the Shear force and Bending Moment 2. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the
diagram for the following beams. pipe. The end screw is subjected to horizontal
force of 5 kN. Hint: Replace the reactions at
pin C by equivalent loadings at point B on the
axis of the pipe.

3. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the

compound beam. It is supported by a smooth
plate at A which slides within the groove and
so it cannot support a vertical force, although
it can support a moment and axial load.

4. The smooth pin is supported by two leaves

A and B and subjected to a compressive
load of 0.4 kN/m caused by bar C.
Determine the intensity of the distributed
load w of the leaves on the pin and draw
the shear and moment diagrams for the pin.
5. Determine the placement distance a of the roller support so that the largest absolute value of the
moment is a minimum. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for this condition.

6. The truck is to be used to transport the concrete column. If the column has a uniform weight of w
(load/metre), determine the equal placement lengths a of the supports from the ends so that the
absolute maximum bending moment in the column is as small as possible. Also, draw the shear force
and bending moment diagrams for this.

7. Shear force diagram for simply supported beams at point A and B is shown. Draw the diagram of beam
along with its loading and corresponding bending moment diagram.
