Arnold, Amanda. The US States Prohibiting the Discussion of Abortion in High Schools.

Broadly, Amanda Arnold, 21 Oct. 2016

There are some states that allow the topic of abortion to be discussed in high school sex

education programs. For example, the state of Oklahoma decided to educate teens that abortion

kills a living human being and create an abortion-free society which will go into effect on

November 1. On the other hand, most states do not permit schools to address the topic because

they either ban the discussion or say that abortion is murder. Schools across the United States

are willing to teach their students about everything from sex to condoms to abortions. Some

states debate that education should just be around health promotion and sexuality and not on

abortions.

Dea, Vanessa. Abortion Debate: Do the Schools Have A Role in Counseling Girls?

Education Week, 1 May 2016

A teenage girl considered to seek advice from a school counselor because she is pregnant and

is wondering what to do. Groups that represent school counselors and education policymakers

questioned if is it appropriate for the counselor to present a range of alternatives, which one of them
would be abortion, without her parents consent. The manager of the national education policy

network at the National School Boards Association thinks that it is not the counselors job to discuss

abortion. Others said that they try to present options to student if the situation is appropriate and to

invite the parents in the conversation. Situations like this can escalate into dilemmas for counselors,

school boards, and administrators.

Schilling, Chelsea. Schools Let Students Seek Secret Abortions.

WND, WND, 18 Nov. 2009

Female students are prohibited from medical services such as abortions. A debate started

when school policies allow children to be excused during class time without parental notification. A

meeting was scheduled to discuss the policy, along with many parents who came and filled the

district building lobby. After the debate and the voice from the public, the San Juan Unified School

District voted against the policy change. The public were pleased that the school board agreed with

parental responsibility and local control of school decisions.
