There are some states that allow the topic of abortion to be discussed in high school sex
education programs. For example, the state of Oklahoma decided to educate teens that abortion
kills a living human being and create an abortion-free society which will go into effect on
November 1. On the other hand, most states do not permit schools to address the topic because
they either ban the discussion or say that abortion is murder. Schools across the United States
are willing to teach their students about everything from sex to condoms to abortions. Some
states debate that education should just be around health promotion and sexuality and not on
abortions.

A teenage girl considered to seek advice from a school counselor because she is pregnant and
is wondering what to do. Groups that represent school counselors and education policymakers
questioned if is it appropriate for the counselor to present a range of alternatives, which one of them
would be abortion, without her parents consent. The manager of the national education policy
network at the National School Boards Association thinks that it is not the counselors job to discuss
abortion. Others said that they try to present options to student if the situation is appropriate and to
invite the parents in the conversation. Situations like this can escalate into dilemmas for counselors,
