1. What is meant by electrostatic induction?


2. Write do you mean by permittivity of a medium?
3. Two identical metallic spheres of exactly equal masses are taken. One is given a positive charge q
coulombs and other an equal negative charge. Are their masses after charging changes?
4. Ordinary rubber is an insulator. But the special rubber types of aircrafts are made slightly
conducting . Why is this necessary?
5. Why is it that a man sitting in an insulated metal cage does not receive any shock when it is

Why not?
(b) Explain why two field lines never cross each other at anypoint .

10. Three capacitors each of capacitance 9 p F are connected in series.


(a) What is the total capacitance of the combination?

(b) What is the potential difference across each capacitor when the combination is connected to
a 120V supply?

11. In a hydrogen atom ,the electron and proton are bound at a distance of about 0.53 A.
(i) Estimate the potential energy of the system in eV , taking the zero of potential energy at
infinite separation of the electron from proton.
(ii) What is the minimum work required to free the electron, given that its kinetic energy in the
orbit is half the magnitude of potential energy obtained in (i) ?
(iii) What are the answers to(i) and (ii) above it the zero of potential energy is taken at
1.06 A separation?
12. Define the term electric dipole moment. Derive an expression for the total work done in rotating
the

dipole through an angle in uniform electric field E .
13. What is dielectric ? A dielectric slab of thickness t is kept between the plates of a parallel plate
capacitor separated by distance d. Derive the expression for the capacitance of the capacitor for
t <<d.
14. State Gausss theorem in electrostatics. Apply this theorem to calculate the electric field due to a
uniformly charged spherical shell at a point.
(i) Inside the shell (ii) on the shell and (iii) outside the shell.
15. Define electric flux. Write its SI unit.
A charge q is enclosed by a spherical surface of radius R. If the radius is reduced to half, how
would the
electric flux through the surface change?
16. State Gausss theorem and express it mathematically. Using it, derive an expression for the
electric
field intensity at a point near a thin infinite plane sheet of charge density Cm -2.?

corners. How much extra work is needed to do this.
19. The radii of two charged metallic spheres are 5 cm and 10cm. Both have a charge of 75 C. Both
the spheres are connected together with a conducting wire. Calculate
(i) the quantity of charge transferred through the wire and
(ii) the common potential of the spheres after connecting them.
20. Answere carefully:
(i) A comb run through ones dry hair attracts small bits of paper. Why ? What happens if the
hair is wet or if it is a rainy day.
(ii) Vehicles carrying inflammable materials usually have metallic ropes touching the ground
during motion . Why?
(iii) A bird perches on a bare high power line and nothing happens to the bird. A man standing
on the ground touches the same line and gets a fatal shock. Why ?

21. A spherical conducting shell of inner radius r1 and outer radius r2 ha a charge Q.
(a) A charge q is placed at the centre of the shell. What is the surface charge density on the inner
and outer surface of the shell?
(b) Is the electric field inside a cavity (with no charge) zero even if the shell is not spherical, but
has any irregular shape? Explain.
22. When two charged conductors having different capacities and different potentials are joined
together ,show that there is always a loss of energy.

23. Two capacitors with capacity C1 and C2 are charged to potential V1 and V2 respectively and then
connected in parallel. Calculate the common potential across the combination, the charge on
each capacitor, the electrostatic energy stored in the system and the change in the electrostatic
energy from its initial value.

24. In figure (a) and (b) show the field lines of a single positive and negative charge respectively.

(i) Give the sign of the potential differences, VP-VQ: VB-VA

(ii) Give the sign of the potential energy difference of a small negative charge between the
points Q and P; A and B.
(iii) Give the sign of the work done by the field in moving a small positive charge fro Q to P.

(iv) Give the sign of the work done by an external agency in moving a small negative charge
from B to A..
25. (i) Find the equivalent capacitance between the points P and Q as shown in Figure . Given C=18
F and C2=12F.

(iii) Four capacitors C1, C2, C3 and C4 are connected to a battery of 12V, as shown in figure . Find
the potential
difference between the point A and B.

26. (i) Explain the underlying principal of working of a parallel plate capacitor. If two similar plates,
each of area A having surface charge densities + and - are separated by a distance d in air,
write expression for :

(a) The electric field between the two plates (b) The potential difference between the plates
(c ) The capacitance of the capacitor so formed.
(ii) A parallel plate capacitor, each with plate area A and separation d, is charged to a potential
difference V. the battery used to charge it is then disconnected. A dielectric slab of thickness d
and dielectric constant K is now placed between the plates, What change if any, will take place
in : (i) charge on plates, (ii) electric field intensity between the plates (iii) capacitance of the
capacitor. Justify your answer in each case.

(iv) On charging a parallel plate capacitor to a potential V, the spacing between the plates is
halved, and dielectric medium of r =10 is introduced between the plates, without
disconnecting the d.c. source. Explain, using suitable expressions, how the (i) capacitance, (ii)
electric field and (iii) energy density of the capacitor change.

27. (i) Three concentric metallic shells A, B and C of radii, a b and c ( a< b<c) have surface charge
densities + - and + respectively, as shown in Figure
(a) Find potential of three shells A,B,C.

(b) If shells A and C are at the same potential, obtain the relation between radii a,b,c

(v) Derive an expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor. Hence show the

electric field . E is a source of energy with energy density o Jm -3.
