Lesson Idea Name: The Life Cycle of Plants and Animals

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different living organisms.
a. Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such
as a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a
butterfly.
d. Develop models to illustrate the unique and diverse life cycles of organisms other than humans.
Technology Standard Addressed:
ISTE1: Empowered Learner: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. Students:
a. articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and
reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
ISTE3: Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct
knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Students:
b. evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of information, media, data or other
resources.
ISTE6: Creative Communicator: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety
of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals. Students:
a. choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or
communication.
b. create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.
c. communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as
visualizations, models or simulations.
d. publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences.

Lesson idea implementation: Students will learn about the different life cycles of plants and animals. I
wanted to use PowerPoint to instruct the different stages of life a living organism has. I would introduce this
in the beginning of the lesson, so students are presented with information about the subject. This lesson is
specifically teacher based because the teacher needs to instruct the content. I will like the lesson to last 30 to
45 minutes long depending on in-class discussions. In addition, I recorded my voice to the PowerPoint so
students can pull this information off the classroom blog, and go over it as many times as they want. Also, I
recorded my voice for my visually impaired students.

At the end of my PowerPoint it has an open-ended question asking: what other life cycles can they think of?
This will change the learning from teacher directed to student directed. I would like the students to pick their
favorite animal, and make a PowerPoint of its life cycle. Even though PowerPoint can be used at a LoTi level 1
or 2, I want to extend it to a level 4 because I want the students to have a voice and choice when using this
software. By giving them a choice of how they want to create their project it allows them to be different and
authentic with their work. At the end of their project, students will present their animal and I will assess them
on that. I will do a glow and grow assessment for each student. A glow and grow is feedback that is positive
(glow) and feedback that is constructive (grow). Altogether, the project should take several weeks to do
because students will have to understand how to work PowerPoint, then gather information about their living
organism, and give each student a chance to present.
