Overview of India's 3-Dimensional Rohini Radar

RADAR stands for Radio Detection And Ranging. It can be a way of detecting things
that cannot be easily seen. Using high-frequency radio waves. The efficient radar
system is one of the most important requirements in the defence system of any
country. They have built-in software algorithms that help to detect and classify target
and then attack if any hostile thing is found.

For a more effective and accurate surveillance and more secure communication
network, integration of radar systems has become a necessity. Modern radar systems
consist of advanced materials and digital signal processors so that the defence
industry can make the best use of them. These systems have imaging capability and
can serve a variety of purposes like wide-area search, target tracking, fire control, and
weather monitoring. Our countrys defence system also has a galaxy of highly
advanced radar systems.

Rohini is a 3-dimensional surveillance radar system developed by Indias Defence

Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This system is engineered and
produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

It can handle several targets, in different directions simultaneously. Those targets can
be missiles and fighter jets travelling at the supersonic speed of 3000 KMPH or Mach
3. This radar system is capable of operating n a range of up to 170 km and an altitude
of 15 km. Rohini is mounted on TATRA mobile platform which is built by the Bharat
Earth Movers Limited (BEML). It is also supported by an auxiliary mobile power unit
so that the radar system can be transported to the battlefront very quickly when
required.

The main purpose of developing Rohini radar was to get better air surveillance
capability, especially at lower altitudes. Now this ground-based mechanically
scanning S-band pulse Doppler radar has become the backbone of Indian air defence.
Successful trials of a Rohini variants also have been conducted for tracking missiles
and aircrafts while distinguishing friendly and hostile ones. It has many advanced
technologies like a digital receiver and a programmable signal processor that offers
accuracy and high resolution. Rohini radar system has multiple applications like an
early warning for air defence weapon system. It is easy to operate and can be
transported by rail, road or air. It has the deployment time of fewer than 30 minutes.

The first Rohini Radar was delivered to the Indian Air Force on August 6, 2008. It has
enhanced air traffic safety and efficiency. This radar system has Electronic Counter
Counter Measure (ECCM) capability. A secondary surveillance radar system, IFF is
also integrated with it. It can be operated in all weather conditions and also under
hostile EW operational environment.
