Project 2: Morphology
Organizing literature circles
1. Choose the books. To validate cultural diversity and broaden students cultural literacy,
select a variety of books that deal with a particular theme in various cultural contexts.
With older students, short stories can also be used. Depending on the size of the class,
you may need four to six copies of several different books or stories. Choose books or
stories at various readability levels to accommodate students needs.
Choose themes addressed in the mainstream English or language arts curriculum
or that relate to other subjects such as social studies and science. Possible themes include
journeys, friendship, adventure, making peace, escape, growing up, family, overcoming
adversity, identity, and dreams. Biographies related to themes such as freedom fighters, great
writers, and inventors can also be chosen.
Ask the schools teacher-librarian or librarian in your communitys public library for help
in researching suitable literature. Other resources are mentioned in To Learn More at the
end of this chapter. (155 words)
