Objective:
The objective of applied bassoon lessons is to develop the highest level of musicianship, technical
ability, and performance skills. Additionally, this course will provide an orientation to and experience
with the fundamentals of pedagogy. These abilities will enable the student to progress in their college
curriculum as well as their professional career. Lessons will focus on the specific needs of each student
with the expectation that all students enrolled will demonstrate high standards of preparedness and
performance in each lesson, participation in studio events, and professional conduct.
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory at all lessons. Unexcused absences are not permitted. Permission to be
excused must be requested 24 hours in advance.
Grading:
Lesson Preparation: 50%
Professionalism: 25%
Reedmaking: 15%
Performance: 10%
Lesson Preparation:
Each lesson will be given an individual grade based on the following criteria. The average of these grades
will determine your final lesson preparation grade.
the lesson; however, the technical and musical errors in addition to inconsistent practice habits have
created a lesson delivery below expectations.
Professionalism:
Arrive to lessons and ensemble rehearsal on time, warmed-up, and with the proper equipment (reeds,
stands, music, etc.). Prepare music outside of class. Respond quickly to scheduling and other emails. Be
an engaged and contributing member of the ensemble in coaching and rehearsal.
Reedmaking:
All bassoon majors must make at least 25 reeds per semester. You will be graded on retention and
application of techniques discussed in reed class and on increasing independence as a reed maker.
Performance:
Successfully perform music in studio class, sectionals, and in solo recitals as assigned.
