To create the subtle mystic of shadows,
highlights, silhouettes and light patterns that
d.e the afl of la.dscaoe lighting requires
functional lighting designed and engineered for
exterior use.

Landscape lighting. however, must be more

ihan the effect it achieves. Fixtures must be
designed to blend inconspicuously with the
natural beauty of the surroundings in daylight
as well. The source of light should be effect-
ively concealed. Most important is that the
fixtures are skillfully engineered and crafted to
withstand the rigors, hazards and abuse of the
natural elements, assuring durability and safety
through many years of use.

Kim is a pioneer in exterior lighting with more

than a third o{ a century of experience in the
manufacture of landscage lighting. Kim assures
you the best economy in all its products, that
of quality backed by a guarantee.

ln making the lighting layout first establish the objectives you wish to obtain ls the lighling to be
viewed trom the inside only or trom the inside and outside? ls it to light an area where dining might take
place? Having determined the objective, begin the lighting layout. As an example, if you wish the main
area of the landscape lighted for viewing from inside the house, visually survey the landscape from this
point, noting the main features whether it be statuary, a tree, a path or flower beds. From the three basic
catagories of landscape lighting fixtures: [1] Up Lighting, l2l Down Lighting or [3] Spread Lighting
select the proper light or lights to illuminate each of the features ldentified Indicate these on your plan.

away from low entwining branches running out frorn the base. This will permit light to filter up through
the tree creating the desired shadows and silhouettes. From one up to four or five up lights maybe
needed depending on the size of the tree. Throughout the Kim catalog you will find a variety of uplights
for various types of mounting. ln garden areas having a shallow depth, greater depth and visual separation
of features from the background planting may be achieved with a silhouette lighting by placing the up
lights in back of the tree trunk or behind plants that are relatively open. Generally flood type lamps are
preferable for use in up lighting fixtures, however, for tall narrow trees such as palms, spot larnps are
more effective

ways, paths, fJower beds, outdoor dining areas or wherever a soft light is required. Suspended from tree
limbs, down lights are not only the most desirous type of lighting for these applications, but the most
economical. The units should be hung high in trees when shadows are desired or mounted low for such
uses as dining areas wheTe shadows are not wanted.

no convenient means of suspended overhead lighting is available. They provide both a decorative element
as well as effective light for walks, drives, entrances, borders or large flower beds. lf possible, placethe

- Most of the landscape lighting in this catalog is avallable for either perrranent or
portable installation. Both offer distinct advantages and the choice will depend on which best suits your
specific needs. The portable installation offers the obvious advantage of mobility and flexibility in a
changing landscape. This system requires permanently installed conduit with convenience outlets spaced
to allow fixture placement within a six foot radius of each outlet. The portable fixtures are spear
mounted and complete with a six foot three wire cord and plug. Outlets must have three-wire receptacles
to prevent any hazard of electrical shock. The permanent installation is an immobile conduit system wlth
fixtures mounted directly to junction boxes. This system is usually the more preferable. lt preventsany
risk of theft, assures the fixtures remain in an upright position and in focus, eliminates the upkeep or
replacement of cords and insures a grounded system. ln insta ling permanent lighting, provisions should

I be included for installing additional lighting in the future. There are many fine books on landscape
lighting that offer in great detail information on the selection and placement of lighting. Sefore fina izing
your plan, you will find it helpful to refer to such books at your local library or consult a llghting
engineer, landscape architect or other authority on garden liohtino.
