Reflection of Drama Analysis

This reflection is on my drama analysis of the drama M. Butterfly by David Henry

Hwang. Firstly I changed my title to better fit the drama and be informative of my essay.

Professor Batty told me that my thesis was strong but I needed a counterargument to make it

better. For my counterargument I talked about how the M in M. Butterfly is ambiguous and

can stand for anything. The ambiguity matters because in the opera Madama Butterfly, the

woman is the butterfly. In the drama, Gallimard is the butterfly, where the M can stand for Mister

or Monsieur. One of my quotes regarding the main theme of the story was good but required

some explanation, stating that it was important because the man is usually seen as the one who

always has the last word over their lovers. I also had to change a few of my topic sentences

because they were a bit too repetitive. Another problem was how much of a quote I used. I took a

quote from a page but I took too much of it. In the paragraph I was just trying to show how Song

is being a submissive chinese girl but I didnt need all the line breaks and stage directions.

Throughout my essay, Eastern and Western were not capitalized which is wrong because theyre

pronouns. I also had to go back and make all references to the play into present tense and not

past tense. Since Puccinis is not a play I had to change all references to it as an opera.
