CANADIAN HORSE DEFENCE COALITION RELEASES

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (US) DOCUMENTS ON

LES VIANDES DE LA PETITE-NATION SLAUGHTER PLANT
and KURTENBACH LIVESTOCK LLC

June 11, June 15, July 13, 2015

The following documents were obtained through the United States Freedom of Information Act for Les
Viandes de la Petite-Nation slaughterhouse in Quebec.

This specific ask was: Any and all information and documentation pertaining to a load of horses conveyed
to Canada for slaughter by Kurtenbach Livestock LLC (CFIA Import Inspection Certification Serial No.
437298) between June 14, 2015, and January 20, 2016.

The information received was far more complete than the Canadian equivalent, the Access to Information
Act. For the specified time period, there were only four that pertained to Kurtenbach Livestock one load
on June 11, two loads on June 15 and one load on July 13. All occurred in 2015 and all originated from the
Kurtenbach collecting station in Lawlor, Iowa. Additional information on Kurtenbach Livestock can be found
on the Animals Angels web site at www.animalsangels.org.

Below are the FOIA documents for the four loads, totaling 131 horses. Note that the load identified as VS-
IA-15-CA-006-00010304, dated June 15, 2015, 32 horses, was turned back due to a non-ambulatory
horse. See the CHDCs ATI Rejected Loads in June, 2015, and scroll down to Trailer 5.

As expected, Quarterhorses followed by Standardbreds lead in breeds slaughtered. Interesting to note also
that there is an approximate 60/40 split between the numbers of females to males that were shipped to
slaughter.

Ages of the horses range from two to twenty-two years, with an average of ten years. Included in these 131
horses, were one mule and four Tennessee Walking Horses. What was absent was the presence of
Thoroughbreds or the absence of Thoroughbreds being identified as such. There were also two
unneutered males in two of the shipments; it is unknown whether they were segregated on their loads.
