the thing: an abandoned wood door

Interior designer Rosa Santiago Zimmerman is always on the lookout for
furniture to rescue. Case in point: This modern, clean-lined desk started
out life as an abandoned door that she found laying on a curb one day.
She was in need of a desk that was long and wide enough to serve as
a work area when she reviewed architectural plans and drawings. She
decided to repurpose the wood and add a playful twisttable legs she
purchased from IKEA. Rosa loves her desk and even though, as a designer, Rosa Santiago Zimmerman
she has access to the best of the best, this is one of her favorite pieces. Owner of RSZ Interiors

The abandoned door was made of high-density fiberboard (HDF), composed of

compressed wood fibers to make it very dense and strong. The HDF was sanded and
a primer was applied to seal and waterproof it.Then came three coats of Behr Pencil
Point paint in a high-gloss finish. During the third coat, a mahogany glaze stain was
mixed with the paint to give the illusion of wood grain. Then Rosa added three coats of
high-gloss varnish. Once the top was completed, she nailed -inch copper nail heads
to the woods border to give it an antique look.Last, she attached four Vika Fintorp IKEA
metal table legs.

HGTV star Chip Wade was approached by
homeowners in Georgias Forsyth County
BEFORE with an unusual request. The husband-and-
wife duo along with their two teenage boys
adore their animals. They wanted to remodel
the barn that housed their beloved horses
in a way that would incorporate the stables into
the familys living space. Instead of building a new
house from scratch, Chip and HGTVs Elbow Room
crew went to work to make it happen. The result? A
barn conversion like no otherwhat was once only
a functional space filled with animals turned into a
luxurious living space for the human half of the family.

This family wanted a way to feel
close to and see their animals all the
time. The solution? A picture window
looking directly into the stable.
The design turned two horse stalls and a storage room into a living room space
and opened the ceiling up to the roof. They used clever animal-friendly details, like
building a room for dogs under the stairs, a catwalk and storage on the second
level and windows where horses could check in on the family. Rustic elements from
the original barn were repurposed as design features, like the stalls barn doors that
were turned into closet doors. Sometimes, you have all you needits right under
your nose, Wade says. When you know how to rework square footage intelligently,
its amazing what you can create. For this family, finding a way to be as close as
possible to their animals (without the smell) was just what they wanted!

Peter Servold of Pete's Paleo dishes up healthy recipes

eter Servold used the art of cooking to woo Sarah Menkes seven years ago. We did a Paleo challenge
together, he says. I went to the store and got every vegetable and different proteins. From there, hed go
to Sarahs place to prepare the meal. And when he arrived, Sarah would be plugging away on her computer
while sipping a glass of wine. I would be in the kitchen cooking and I thought, This would be a good life,
this would be a good thing.' It ended up being a great thing. The two got married in 2011 and the following year,
opened Petes Paleo, an online meal delivery service with commercial kitchens in San Diego and Atlanta.
People take everything so literally with the Paleo diet and they say, Paleolithic? Do you cut with a rock and
cook over an open fire?'" He sees the diet in a different light. It's
better described as the Great
Grandmother' diet," he says. If your great grandmother wouldnt recognize it as
food then it is probably not food."
