My English Language History

In this journey through time on my History of English, I am going to travel back

more than fourty years when I came to Los Angeles . I have journey that included the

positive part and the negative part . I have basically a very nice experience that I lived

throught the hardest time of my life . First, in this very positive part of my journey began

in P.C.C. only a few semesters back . My professor I am talking about is one of the greatest

I ever encountered in my years of studying. I wrote lots of summaries from Ted Talks. Also

I used poetry as a tool to learn English, and did several presentations. That helped me to

talk and be able to speak without feeling fear. Those presentations gave me all the tools and

the basics of improving my English. I discovered the importance of learning English

language proficiently; I knew that there is no shortcut to learning English. My persistance

was the major secret of my success .In fact my secret of my success had come from my

failures .

Some very modern ideas from Carol Dweck are absolutely new to me , and tell us

that: A growth mind-set will create motivation and resilience .That will lead to higher

achievement . I learned that the brain is like a muscle, the more I exercise it the

stronger it becomes. My mind after was better and more powerfull . I was able to pave the

road of my future .The path I took was the result of my choices I made or failed to

make .My fathers influence over me led me to follow in a positive way the path of learning

English. His influence was so strong because I remember that he used to study many words

with the dictionary in hand. Also, he was always a very methodical person with a good

system to learn words . He had lots of pieces of paper with words that he read ,and

memorized .

The beginning for writing is very important ,because they have lots of strength and

intensity. The quotation from First Thoughts by Natalie Golberg will give us an idea about

it .The same is true in writing you must be a great warrior when you contact first thoughts

and write for them. You dont stop writing you continue to use your pen and record the

details of your life and penetrate into the heart of them .This means that the very first

energy in writing is very important and productive .

The negative part of my English language History was during my occupation

because I was a salesman ,and I had to talk mainly in Spanish . I acquired lots of knowledge

on language and I learned how to said thank you in fifteen different languages. For

twenty years that I spent in that job , my knowledge of English was limited. Later , I realize

that I needed to write like my cousin in Croatia . She wrote several books about poems.

Also my older cousin is an ambasador of Croatia , who wrote some books , and can be

found on wikipedia .

A very nice quotation from the article Mother Tonge by Amy Tan, that .Iam

fascinated by language in daily life .I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the

power of language. The way it can evoke an emotion a visual image,a complex idea ,or a

simple truth.(47). She had a love for the English without any equal. This made me

understand better that the most important thing is the love that I have for the language .

Because of my enjoyment for my Englishes ,and my persistence to learn, it made me be able

to achieve very important goals .This helped me not only in my English, but also led me

in the road of learning languages, and on my English History . The influence that my

father made on me to learn the different customs from many countries, and my love for my

lexicons of each language took me even further on that path . I admired my father very

much, and his influence on me was so strong that it even surprises even me. He spoke

Croatian,Italian,Castilian Spanish, and English. Learning the lexicon of the languages made

me travel to the origen of the word ,like the word O.Kwas invented in the 1840s.(Old

Kinder Hood name of political affiliation. AlsoI knew that the words came from latin or

Greek. The many languages that I know and my English will be very helful in my future.

I realize that in this essay I m able to use many words and my grammar gets better

and better. In addition, my writing ability is improving to use it to write my fathers journal,

that I waited so many years to do it . Also I know that I always have obstacles in my

way ,whether a simple one or a harder one .This piece shows many improvements in my

writing ability, because I am able to write with less mistakes ,and master the English

language in a much better way . I am able to love more writing and reading . I n the process

of creating this essay. I learned many things about being confident in writing.

Furthermore , I predict that the influence of my father and knowledge of the English

language are going to make me a good traslator like my brother.Another prediction is that I

can offer my services as a tourist guide ,or become teacher of languages.Last semester I

received my first Occupational Certificate from P.C.C, because I have successffully

completed the curriculum of intermediate level in Italian .I have to thank the P.C.C for

the important roll in my education, and also for making my dream come true. This semester

I have started my level five in English and I was very glad I did.

Once more on the negative part. I started college three years ago and I have some

obstacles that Iam still facing today . After analizing my problems carefully to identify in

detail key factors to obtain possible resuls. The biggest obstacle is that I have financial

problems because of the recession that we had in 2008. It is very hard for me to be able to

get back on my feet again. In my business the sales went down and was impossible

to survive with those profits .Also my divorce was hard because I had to paid a big amount

of money . Futhermore I have two sons that I need to help economically because they have

needs. The way that I overcame this was by applying for financial aid .

Moreover , I learned many things in my journey through time on my History of

English , and my future looks very bright ,and believe that I will be able to overcome my

obstacles successfully. My future looks very good , with a nice family which, I love very

much to spend the rest of my life with .Iam not perfect but in the end I think that I will

resolve all the obstacles that I encounter in my journey , and I will be traveling without any

obstruction in the way of my happiness. My father told me that the reward in overcoming

obstacles whether real or perceived is always far greater than giving up or succumbing.

I believe that like the great philosopher Socrates said long time ago Life is a race against

time.I dont have enough time to learn all the things I want ,but I want to leave a big mark

in the road, during my travel in the journey of my English language history .

Finally, I know that my writing needs practice, but now I am more confident.

In addition Iamexpanding my vocabulary and organizing my ideas in the structure of my

essays which is very important .In conclusion I had a very nice journey in my English

because everything was about the experience that I had , loving every minute of it. The goal

of course its important, but if I dont love all that I do there will be no meaning what so

ever. I guess that my experience it is very similar to Amy Tan in her articleMotherTongue.

Because my English was very limited . Also the teachings by Carol Deweck help me develop

achieve , and understand better the growth mind-set .

In conclusion , my journey was a very positive one that I enjoyed very much , and

it had a profound effect on myself . I dont know how many more years I need to travel ,to

achieve my goals , but what Iam really certain is that my English language history was a

very nice one.
