Absorb Activity

The absorb activity is a user interface tour software demonstration. The learner will be viewing a
recorded demonstration during the face-face training. Learners dont interact with the recording, only
observe, which makes it an absorbing activity. According to Horton, software demonstrations are useful
to orient learners to a new area in a computer program, which make it an appropriate choice for this
objective. The learners in this example currently use the database, but will be required to navigate new
areas to locate the necessary information. User-interface tours can answer the questions such as
whats there, what can the program do, and what do these icons mean? (Horton, 2012, p. 76). A few
ways this activity is designed to meet the universal design for learning principles is that the
demonstration will be a step by step navigation and be displayed visually and be accompanied with
audio instruction. Audio will be provided with closed captioning. The recording will be accessible for
learners to review after the training to watch as often as they desire and they will be able to adjust the
volume and speed.

The demonstration will provide an overview of each of the 3 tabs that hold benefit information, the
provider, coverage and shopping cart tabs. It will show where each tab is located in the database and
how to search for benefit information in each of the tabs.

Here is the scripting for the introduction of the software demonstration.

Welcome to this tutorial on accessing benefit information in the database.

There are no instructions except to relax and watch the presentation.
This demonstration is intended to orient you to the areas of the database you will access benefit
information once you have determined that the benefit information is basic and it is appropriate
for you to provide to the member.
Since you are currently using the database, we recognize you are familiar with the basic
functionality of the database and this demonstration will focus on 3 tabs that you can access
benefit information in.
Do Activity

The software demonstration will be partnered with a software simulation, which is a do activity.
According to Horton, it is best practice to follow a software demonstration with a simulation (Horton,
2012). The learner will have access to the database in a practice environment. The simulation will allow
them to practice what they observed during the software demonstration, which makes it a do activity
and will appropriately partner with the absorb activity. This activity addresses the universal design for
learning principles by providing a physical aspect to the training. The simulation will have both text and
audio. Learners will independently navigate the simulation and have as much or little time as they
would like to navigate. They will be provided with the expectation that they must complete the
simulation in its entirety.
The simulation will be introduced as a time for learners to actively navigate the database in a safe
environment, and will provide clear direction on how to complete the simulation. The software
simulation will be a coached task simulation and provide specific instruction for each step. The learner
will be directed to maneuver and click on each of the 3 tabs in any order they choose. Once they open
each tab, they will be provided details on the information that can be found in that tab with examples of
what type of information they may locate there. The simulation will require the learner to navigate
each tab and review the details. They can navigate each tab as many times as they wish, but will have to
review each tab and the all the details before the can successfully complete the simulation.
Connect Activity
The connect activity will be a scavenger hunt with questions on the Final Mastery Quiz, so the connect
activity dually acts as an assessment. The scavenger hunt with questions and feedback from the Final
Mastery Quiz are detailed below. The scavenger hunt allows the learner to apply their knowledge and
navigate the database to locate the information requested. Informative feedback will be provided for
both correct and incorrect responses. The connect activity meets the universal design for learning
principles by providing specific feedback to the learner. The activities to address this objective are a
good example of guiding the information process with models and scaffolding.
