Project scope
Plan the network to be deployed in three new buildings which are (IT Centre Building; Robert
Sobukwe Building; Steve Biko Memorial Building) on a new West Coast university campus. These
building should belongs to a separate Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) as the way of improving
security.

Building Requirements
The IT Centre Building contains a dedicated computer room containing a single high end server
which provides services such as DHCP, Print services, Web to students and staff who may need
to gain access from the Internet as well as from within the universitys own network. The IT room
also has 5 desktop PCs for the IT staff.

The Robert Sobukwe Building contains the offices of 22 lecturers and 8 administrators who only
use medium power desktop computers located on fixed desks. The building also has a single
printer.

The Steve Biko Memorial Building contains two lecture rooms and a lounge/coffee shop. The
lecture rooms each have a desktop computer at the front for use by the lecturers as well as 20
desktops for students. However, some lecturers and students prefer to use their own laptop or
tablet computer. All the students use laptop or tablet computers to take notes.

An underground duct exists between IT Centre Building and Robert Sobukwe Building which are
130 metres apart. The Steve Biko Memorial Building is 80 metres from IT Centre Building but no
ducts exist.

Instructions
To avoid the overcrowding of the simulation environment, students may represent the maximum
Users per building with any few number of users. For instance, they may decide to have only two
users per building (i.e. by using 1st usable address and last usable address). However,
students are advised to configure more than two hosts per building.

Question 1 [24 Marks]

Analyze and design a network for the West Coast university campus. Provide a detailed
documentation of the network you have designed and rationale for the choices that you have
made.

3
a. Plan your network and document all the requirements per building. This would include
all the components of the network. (12)
b. Show a good IP addressing scheme for your LANs and WANs (12)

NB: With regards to all the routers, you have been asked to use your expertise in allocating
the IP address 192.168.1.0/30. All buildings will need to be networked to assure
connectivity. It is your choice whether to use Satellite / Wireless /or Cabled connections.
In this type of institution, you also need to consider Redundancy for the network.
Redundancy only needs to be applied to each building once.

Question 2 [55 Marks]

Implement your design. The implementation, including working demonstrations, should be done
within Cisco Packet Tracer. The implementation should have the following:

a. All buildings should be networked according to the scenario to ensure connectivity.

(12)
b. Include appropriate wireless connections necessary for each building. (9)
c. Network services like DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) should be
configured where necessary (12)
d. Include relevant device configurations, such as router configurations, and working
switch VLAN configurations (15)
e. You should also consider redundancy for the network. Note that redundancy can only
be applied to each building once. Assume scalability within your design and
implementation to account for 10% annual growth. (7)

Question 3 (12)
This section focuses on router security and connectivity testing.
a. Perform a ping test of devices across the three buildings to prove that there is
connectivity between devices. Provide screenshots. (12)

Question 4 (9)
This section focuses on security and authentication.
4.1 As the network planner, set distinct passwords on all the main routers in each
building. Show all the steps (with screenshots) of how you carried out this task. (6)
4.2 Prove that the password you implemented on the routers in Question 4.1 is working
on all routers. Provide screenshots. (3)
