Vehicle Safety Monitoring System 2017-18

Abstract :
Rising vehicle accidents is a major concern across the world. A large percentage
of people die from vehicle accident injuries. An effective approach is necessary to
overcome this issue. Recent approaches are using built-in vehicle automatic accident
detection and other safety features but these are expensive and not available in all cars.
Accident detection and notification, drowsiness warning and parking assistor is
implemented in this project. Whenever an accident occurs, the respective location is
sent to nearby hospital and to the family. The drowsiness of the driver is detected and
the driver is alerted. This project also assists the driver while parking the vehicle.

1. INTRODUCTION
Major of the vehicle accidents are caused mainly due to the driver fatigue.
Driving for a long period of time causes tiredness which inturn makes the driver sleepy
or loose awareness. Monitoring and alerting the driver can resolve this problem. The
most obvious reason for persons death during accidents is due to the delay in the
information of the accident being reached to the ambulance or the hospital. Thus in the
case of incidents involving vehicular accidents, response time is crucial for the survival
of the victims. Immediate knowledge of the accident and its location has to be sent to
the hospital.

The block diagram of Vehicle Safety Monitoring System is shown in Figure 1.1. All
the sensors(crash sensors, ultrasonic sensors) are connected to the microcontroller
signaling it of the danger. Night Vision Camera is used to detect the drowsiness of the
driver and enable the alert system. In case of accident information is conveyed using
GSM(Global System for Mobile) and GPS(Global Positioning System) modules.
Figure 1.2 shows the positioning of camera and the sensors.

2. ADVANTAGES

Reduced risk when multiple distractions are present, such as when loud children are in
the car
Safer highway driving
Accident prevention late at night, when fatigue may lead to lane departure
Improved protection for teen drivers, who have a tendency to drift in the lane
More warning of accidents when driving in adverse weather conditions
Compensates for human error when driving
Protection of property: If people know they are being taped, they are less likely to
engage in damaging or dangerous activities with your vehicle.
Increased accountability: Parents with teen drivers will appreciate technology that
monitors their children while on the road. Teens are more prone to having poor
driving habits and engaging in dangerous distractions, such as texting.

3. DISADVANTAGES

Worker Resentment

In situations where companies use the devices to track the movements of their truck or
delivery drivers, use of the devices can cause resentment. Drivers may feel that their
privacy is being invaded or that their company doesn't trust them. They may also
experience more stress because of the feeling of being watched at all times. When
employees are also permitted to use the company vehicle for personal use, they can
feel even stronger resentment if they believe that their movements are being tracked
when not on the job.

Expense

Vehicle tracking devices can be expensive to install. A system that uses cellular-based
technology, which transmits information about vehicle movements to a landline every
five minutes, can cost $500 per unit for installation. A wireless passive
tracking device can cost $700 for installation and $800 for software and databases, A
satellite system, which is capable of tracking a vehicle all over the United States, can
also cost around $700. Additional monthly charges may also apply, which in the case
of satellite systems can be as much as $100.

Overdependence

As with any technologies, overdependence on vehicle tracking devices can cause

workers to come to rely too heavily on the system. If the system were to break down,
this could cause a chaotic situation as the company may have a difficult time tracking
deliveries. Workers may be called upon to step out of their "comfort zone" and have
to perform tasks manually that the tracking system would normally do for them. This
can lead to worker stress as well as a decrease in the efficiency of the operation.

4. CONCLUSION

The main aim of this project is to build a prototype that can be embedded in the
vehicle which ensures few safety measures. The proposed system sends information
containing location co-ordinates to predefined emergency contacts including family and
hospitals for help.
