How to Calendar

When beginning to calendar for the upcoming year, find out what has been done in the

past years by looking at old programs. Also look at the dates of your ACDA/VMEA festivals,

and also the date of other school events, such as school dances, homecoming, and grading

semesters. Ask your admin if there are any new expectations and ask permission for things that

must be added. Look at the arts calendar so that the arts can act as a whole and support each

other without conflicting dates of performances and events. When sitting down to write the

calendar, make a draft in writing before transferring to a computer. Then count the number of

weeks between each project to allow time for learning and rehearsals. See how many rehearsals

will be accounted for each performance.

When planning, pick repertoire first by project. There should be two easy pieces, two just

right pieces and two challenging. After this, complete an ASCAM for each piece and plan warm-

ups, solfege and rhythm exercises to accompany each piece. Then make a list of how much needs

to be accomplished each minute of each lesson in each week. When getting prepared for each of

these lessons, make a direct scripted lesson plan and prepare other teaching materials. Then

practice this script and take into account teacher behaviors, rehearsal behaviors, and conducting

behaviors. Finally, deliver all this planning through your teaching and film yourself. This way

you can see what is effective and ineffective. Then you can change lessons accordingly to create

successful rehearsals that will lead to a successful performance.
