A Peek at this Week
After break, here is whats going on in the classrooms:

Math: When we return in January we are starting our work with fractions. We will
begin by building upon the knowledge the students gained from 3rd grade. Topic 8 will
focus on ordering of fractions and fraction equivalence. Students will use their
understanding of numerators and denominators to help with this standard.
Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.A.1
Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n a)/(n b) by using visual
fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even
though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize
and generate equivalent fractions.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.A.2
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by
creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark
fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two
fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =,
or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

Reading & Social Studies: We will continue to read about history through our social
studies unit on NC history. The next topic in social studies is Week 13 (The Carolina
Charter). Students will be focusing on synthesizing complex text, and applying reading
strategies depending on the type of text they are reading.

Writing: The fourth graders have been hard at work reading nonfiction books, and now
its our turn write informational text. Students will begin brainstorming what theyd
like to learn about this week. They will be applying what theyve been learning about
reading nonfiction to create subtopics, determine text structure, and using more than
one text to research their topic.

Science: After Winter Break, students will begin a new science unit. They will begin
studying Earth and Earths rotation. They will look at how day and night are
affected by the Earths rotation and the effects of the sun being on one side of the
Earth versus the other.
