Generators & Regulators

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Generator is a 70-amp, conventional 3-phase, self-rectifying type with an internal solid state voltage regulator.
Battery, battery cables, charge indicator light, wiring and drive belt complete charging system.

Battery voltage is applied at all times to "B" terminal of generator. With ignition turned to ON position, battery
voltage is applied to charge indicator light and to "L" terminal. See Fig. 1 . With engine running, generator
produces an alternating current that flows through a series of rectifying diodes, converting alternating current to
direct current. Direct current is controlled by voltage regulator to keep battery charged. If voltage regulator
senses generator is not producing sufficient output, it grounds "L" terminal, illuminating charge indicator light.

NOTE: The terms generator and alternator are interchangeable. Either may be found
within illustrations.

ADJUSTMENTS
BELT DEFLECTION

Using a belt tension gauge, measure belt deflection midway on belt. New belt deflection should be 86-103 lbs.
(39-47 kg). Used belt deflection should be 68-86 lbs. (31-39 kg). Adjust belts as necessary.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

NOTE: See TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

ON-VEHICLE TESTING
GENERATOR OUTPUT TEST

NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged and load tested before testing. Verify drive belt
tension is correct, electrical wiring and connectors are in good condition and
battery terminals are clean and tight. Wait at least 30 seconds after starting
engine before taking readings.

1. Ensure generator belt tension is correct and battery voltage is above 12.4 volts. Start engine and check if
generator warning light goes out. If generator warning light goes out, go to step 4 . If generator warning
light does not go out, go to next step.
2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, backprobe all 3 generator terminals. Voltage at "B"
and "S" terminals should be 12 volts. Voltage at "L" terminal should be 1 volt. Start engine and recheck
voltage at all 3 generator terminals. Voltage at all 3 terminals should be 14.1-14.7 volts.
3. If voltage is as specified, check wiring between battery and generator "B" terminal. If voltage is not as
specified, check wiring to all generator and connector terminals. If wiring and terminals are okay, replace
generator.
4. Disconnect connector from generator "B" terminal. Turn on all accessories and depress brake pedal.
Using an ammeter, measure amperage between generator "B" terminal and connector. If amperage is 65
amps or more at 2500-3000 RPM, charging system is okay. If amperage is not 65 amps or more at 2500-
3000 RPM, go to next step.

5. Check drive belt tension. See BELT DEFLECTION under ADJUSTMENTS. If belt tension is okay,
replace generator.

BENCH TESTING
BEARING

Check for abnormal noise, looseness and insufficient lubrication. Replace bearing if necessary.

BRUSH

New brush length is .85" (21.5 mm). Minimum brush length is .32" (8.0 mm). If brushes are worn beyond limit,
replace them.

RECTIFIER

Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between each diode. See DIODE CONTINUITY table. See Fig. 2 . If
continuity is not as specified, replace rectifier.

Negative Terminal Positive Terminal Continuity
E PN, P1, P2 & P3 No
B PN, P1, P2 & P3 Yes
T PN, P1, P2 & P3 Yes
PN, P1, P2 & P3 E Yes

ROTOR

Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between slip rings. If resistance is not between 3.5-4.5 ohms, replace rotor.
Check for continuity between slip ring and core. If continuity exists, replace rotor. If slip ring surface is rough,
correct using smooth lathe or fine sandpaper.

STATOR

Using ohmmeter, check continuity between stator coil leads. If no continuity exists, replace stator. Check
continuity between stator coil leads and core. If continuity exists, replace stator.

GENERATOR

Removal & Installation

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly, if necessary. Disconnect all 3 generator
terminals. Loosen pivot bolt, tensioner bolt, and adjusting bolt to remove drive belt. Remove mounting bolts
and lift out generator. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

OVERHAUL
GENERATOR

NOTE: When removing solder from rectifier leads, DO NOT use soldering iron for more
than 5 seconds. Rectifier may be damaged by excessive heat.

Disassembly

1. Remove cap screws from front housing. See Fig. 3 . Using a 200-watt soldering iron, heat rear of bearing
box to allow bearing to be removed from rear housing. Separate front housing from stator.
2. Place rotor into a vise and loosen lock nut. Disassemble pulley, rotor and front housing. If necessary, use
a socket and hand press or vise to remove front bearing.
3. Remove rear bearing with a bearing puller. Remove "B" terminal nut and insulating bushing. Remove
screws holding rectifier and brush holder. Separate rear bracket and stator.
4. Using soldering iron, remove solder from rectifier and stator leads. Remove regulator. Remove solder
from pigtail and remove brush.

Assembly

1. When connecting brush, solder pigtail so that wear limit line of brush projects .079-.118" (2-3 mm) out of
brush holder. Before assembly, hold brushes in brush holder. Pass a .08" (2 mm) wire 1.6-2.0" (40-50
mm) through hole located in generator housing. Secure brushes in position. Remove wire after assembly
is completed.
2. Using a socket same size as bearing and a hand press or vise, carefully push in front bearing. When
installing rear bearing, ensure groove on bearing rim is on slip ring side. To complete assembly, reverse
disassembly procedure. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
