(Vapor Power Cycle)

Q # 01: Steam is supplied dry saturated at 40 bar to a turbine and the condenser pressure is 0.035
bar. If the plant operates on the Rankine cycle, calculate per kg of steam;
i. the work output neglecting the feed pump work;
ii. the work required for the feed pump;
iii. the heat transferred to the condenser cooling water, and the amount of cooling water
required through the condenser if the temperature rise of the water is assumed to be 5.5
K;
iv. the heat supplied;
v. the Rankine efficiency;
vi. the specific steam consumption;

Q # 02: Repeat the Q # 01 for a steam supply conditions of 40 bar and 350oC and the same
condenser pressure of 0.035 bar.

Q # 03: If the isentropic efficiency of turbine is 87 percent and the isentropic efficiency of the
pump is 85 percent determine (a) the thermal efficiency and (b) the net power output of the cycle
described in Q # 1 for a mass flow of 15kg/sec.
Q # 04: Consider a steam power plant operating on the simple ideal Rankine cycle. The steam
enters the turbine at 3 MPa and 350oC and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure of 75 KPa.
Determine the thermal efficiency of this cycle.
Q # 05: Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal Rankine cycle. Steam enters the
turbine at 3 MPa and 350C and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa.
Determine (a) the thermal efficiency of this power plant, (b) the thermal efficiency if steam is
superheated to 600C instead of 350C, and (c) the thermal efficiency if the boiler pressure is
raised to 15 MPa while the turbine inlet temperature is maintained at 600C.
Q # 06: Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal reheat Rankine cycle. Steam enters
the high-pressure turbine at 15 MPa and 600C and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure
of 10 kPa. If the moisture content of the steam at the exit of the low-pressure turbine is not to
exceed 10.4 percent, determine (a) the pressure at which the steam should be reheated and (b) the
thermal efficiency of the cycle. Assume the steam is reheated to the inlet temperature of the
high-pressure turbine.
Q # 07: Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal regenerative Rankine cycle with
one open feed water heater. Steam enters the turbine at 15 MPa and 600C and is condensed in
the condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa. Some steam leaves the turbine at a pressure of 1.2 MPa
and enters the open feed water heater. Determine the fraction of steam extracted from the turbine
and the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
Note: Conclude your results after solving Q# 4, 5, 6 and 7 in the following format:
