STAGE 1 DESIRED RESULTS

Unit Title: Grade 8-Electromagnetic Spectrum

Established Goals (big ideas):

Big Idea: Energy can be transferred as both a particle and a wave.
Rationale
Students will explore the electromagnetic spectrum and light in a hands-on, experiential approach making
connections with their prior knowledge and experiences with light energy in everyday life.
Essential Question(s):What drives the learning?)

o How does electromagnetic energy behave like both a particle and a wave?
o How does electromagnetic radiation shape/enhance our world?
o What are the behaviours of light?
How do the behaviours of light affect the world around us?

Students will be able to / Students will do ( curricular and Students will know; (content)
core competencies) Types and effects of electromagnetic
Co-operatively design projects radiation
Transfer and apply learning to new Light: properties, behaviours
situations
Demonstrate an understanding and
appreciation of evidence.

STAGE 2 ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE

Performance Tasks and/or culminating tasks: Other Evidence:
Properties of light: Ray model of light questionnaire
Properties of light poster Wave stations
peer assessment Visible light stations
Electromagnetic spectrum UV self-designed experiment
Electromagnetic dictionary/visual Mirror Stations
organizer Transmission/absorption self-designed
Electromagnetic quiz experiment
Behaviours of light:

Quiz

Key Criteria:
Students will be able to explain how light acts both as a wave and a particle by applying this learning through
models. Students will co-operatively create science experiments, apply knowledge through experiential, hands-on
centers to explore the electromagnetic spectrum and the behaviours of light to explore and apply their science
knowledge. Students will be able to show their science understanding through application questions,
experiments, models and pictures.
