Reason for Appeal: Inadequate GPA

Justification for Appeal:

A series of medical complications caused a decrease in my GPA from a 3.5 (Fall 2016) to a 2.9
(Spring 2017). Throughout the spring 2017 semester, I had reoccurring and severe
gastrointestinal issues that caused an inability to focus/concentrate. During study times, as well
as class times, I experienced significant abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. I was
subsequently diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and was started on Dicyclomine,
probiotics, and other dietary supplements. With this diagnosis and its following treatment, I
anticipate that my symptoms will be manageable and will allow me to achieve the higher GPA
that I am accustomed to. Additionally, I have suffered pain in my wrist due to an injury which
occurred in high school and was unsuccessfully treated with casting. The symptoms gradually
worsened throughout the spring semester, which required me to take pain medication. Both the
pain and pain medication decreased my ability to focus and concentrate. Ultimately, I was
diagnosed with a nonunion scaphoid fracture for which I underwent an open reduction and
internal fixation of a wrist fracture. In turn, I now have four pins implanted into my wrist and
am wearing a cast. I am scheduled to finally have this cast removed on August 31st and should be
fully recovered for this school year.

Again, I anticipate an increase in my GPA this semester, as medical conditions are now under
better control and I am better able to focus/concentrate. As you may have noticed, I missed the
GPA requirements by 0.1 point for the Opportunity Scholarship and Outstanding Student
Scholarships. I will be greatly honored if these scholarships were reinstated. Unfortunately, the
scholarships that I am receiving, along with my current financial aid and TOPS, do not fully
cover the cost of school. I currently have a balance of $5,430.05. The Opportunity and
Outstanding Student Scholarships are blessings that I simply cannot afford to lose. I was very
pleased with my first semester GPA of 3.5; however, due to a decline in health, I cannot say that
I was pleased with my second semester. Nevertheless, I am better now. I know that I will
achieved great things and great success in the fall 2017 semester.
