Mason-Dixon Mississippi Poll - December 2017
TRUMP & SENATORS GET GENERALLY FAVORABLE JOB RATINGS,
BUT WICKER COULD FACE A COMPETITIVE GOP PRIMARY

Despite the negative national view of Republican leadership in Washington,

Mississippi voters give relatively favorable job ratings to President Donald
Trump and the states two incumbent GOP Senators.

Statewide, 51% say they approve of the job performance of Trump, while 43%
disapprove. This is significantly higher than the approval rating Trump receives
in a wide array of recent national polls.

Senior Senator Thad Cochrans job performance has the approval of 54% of
Mississippi voters, while 32% disapprove. Junior Senator Roger Wicker has an
approval rating of 47%, a disapproval rating of 33% and a significant 20% cant
rate it.

While Wicker has a 70% approval rating from Republican voters, he could still
face a tough primary challenge from Chris McDaniel, who came very close to
defeating incumbent Senator Cochran in 2016.

Among those who indicated they vote regularly in GOP primary elections, Wicker
holds the early advantage, leading 49%-33% in a head-to-head match-up. A
significant 18% are undecided.

Wicker may present a tougher race for McDaniel, because as a candidate he does
not raise the same concerns about age and health as Cochran. However, Wicker
still currently draws slightly less than 50% support from Mississippi Republicans.
He will also be clearly defined as the Washington establishment candidate,
which was the kiss of death in the recent GOP Senate primary process in
neighboring Alabama.

HOW THE POLL WAS CONDUCTED

This poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, Inc. of Jacksonville,
Florida from December 13 through December 15, 2017. A total of 625
registered Mississippi voters were interviewed statewide by telephone.

Those interviewed were randomly selected from a phone-matched Mississippi

voter registration list that included both land-line and cell phone numbers.
Quotas were assigned to reflect voter registration by county.

The margin for error, according to standards customarily used by statisticians,

is no more than 4 percentage points. This means that there is a 95 percent
probability that the "true" figure would fall within that range if all voters were
surveyed. The margin for error is higher for any subgroup, such as a gender or
age grouping.

This poll also includes a sample of 400 regular Republican primary voters. The
margin for error on this survey is 5 percentage points.
