EXAMINATION TO PASS TO SECOND DEGREE

Entered Apprentice before being passed to the Second Degree(Fellow Craft Mason) is
required to give proofs to the RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: or his delegate, of their
proficiency in the secrets of the Entered Apprentice Degree, to repeat the Entered
Apprentice Obligations from memory, and to show some general knowledge of
Masonic procedure and etiquette. To save time, the examination does not usually take
place in Lodge.

It is highly desirable that the following proofs of proficiency should be given, and the
ballot taken, at a meeting prior to the Second Degree.

The Lodge being open in the First Degree, the RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER:
proceeds as follows:

QUESTIONS BEFORE PASSING

The Lodge is open in the First Degree.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: requests Entered Apprentices other than Candidate to


withdraw and indicates with appropriate words that the next business is to pass
Brother A.B

Junior Deacon goes to Candidate takes him by right hand and leads him to position
North of Senior Warden's pedestal both facing East and releases hand.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - Brethren, Brother A.B is (this evening) a Candidate


to be passed to the Second Degree of Fellow Craft, but it is first requisite that he
should give proofs of proficiency in the Fellow Craft Degree. I shall therefore proceed
to ask him the usual questions.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER:- Brother Junior Deacon, you will advance the
Apprentice to the pedestal.

QUESTIONS

(These must be satisfactorily answered from memory)

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER to Candidate - Where were you first prepared to be


made a Freemason?

Junior Warden must be prepared, if necessary, to prompt Candidate in a whisper.

CANDIDATE - In my heart.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - Where next?

CANDIDATE - In a convenient room adjoining the Lodge.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - Describe the mode of your preparation.


CANDIDATE - I was divested of metals and valuables and hoodwinked; My right arm,
left breast and left knee were made bare; my right heel was slip shod and a cable tow
placed about my neck.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: On what were you admitted?

CANDIDATE On the point of sword presented to my left breast.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - Where were you made a Mason?

CANDIDATE - In the body of a Lodge, just, perfect, and regular.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - And when?

CANDIDATE - When the sun was at its meridian.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: Our Lodges in this country being usually held in
the evening, how do you account for this paradox?

CANDIDATE - The earth constantly revolving on its axis in its orbit round the sun, and
Freemasonry being universally spread over its surface, it necessarily follows that the
sun is always at its meridian with respect to Freemasonry.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - What is Freemasonry?

CANDIDATE - A peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by


symbols.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - Name the three grand principles on which the Order
is founded.

CANDIDATE - Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - Who are fit and proper persons to be made
Freemasons?

CANDIDATE The just, upright, and free, of mature age, sound judgment, and strict
morals.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - How do you know yourself to be a Freemason?

CANDIDATE - By the regularity of my Initiation, repeated trials and approbation, and


by my being willing at all times to undergo an examination when properly called on.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: - How do you demonstrate the proof of your being a
Freemason to others?

CANDIDATE - By signs, tokens, and the perfect points of my entrance.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: Give me the proof of your entrance?

CANDIDATE Of, at and on.


RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: Of, at and on what?

CANDIDATE Of my own free will and accord; at the door of the Lodge on the point of
a sword presented to my left breast.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: Brethren these are the usual questions: If any
Brother desires me to put others, let him speak.

Senior Warden (If no brother puts a question Standing with Sign):- The Columns are
silent RIGHT RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER:.

RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: Brother Junior Deacon let the Candidate and all
Entered Apprentices cover the Temple.

Junior Warden - conducts Candidate and all Entered Apprentices cover the Temple.

A ballot is then taken, as to whether the Candidate is worthy of admission to the


Second Degree. If decision be favourable, the Candidate can be passed at a
subsequent meeting. *********

RIGHT RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: to Inner Guard:-The Entered


Apprentices and Candidate be admitted into the Temple.

All the Entered Apprentices and Candidate enter the Temple.

RIGHT RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MASTER: to Candidate:-The ballot is


proven in favour of you and you will be raised at an appropriate meeting.
