1. In this problem you will see several data which are the results of combustion
simulation. (70 points)

(a) (b)

Figure 1. Temperature distribution (K): (a)Coal; (b)Vinasse

Table 1. Flue gas properties

Properties Vinasse Coal
Density(kg/m3) 0.32 0.50
Turbulent Viscosity (kg/m.s) 0.02 0.09
Temperature (K) 1662.06 813.65
H2O mass fraction outlet 0.06 0.04
CO2 mass fraction outlet 0.11 0.15
CO mass fraction outlet 0.02 4.2e-06
H2 mass fraction outlet 0.0009 2.5e-06
Vinasse was one of the main problem of bio-ethanol production. As a waste there are
lots of ways to dispose this waste. One of them is by combustion. The main advantage
of this method is the convertion of waste towards energy to uphold the idea of
conservation.

According to simulation results, perform analytical judgement towards :

a. The potential of vinasse to become alternative energy.

b. Compared to the properties of coal combustion, what is the advantages and
disadvantages of vinasse as fuel.
c. Give your suggestion to tackle disadvantages at problem (b)

2. This picture below is vector velocity of water flows through 3 cm radius of normal
pipe. (30 points)

100 cm

The water flows at 1 kg/s at 4 horizontal pipe (it arranged vertically for purpose) with
3 half circle that connect those pipe. If we need to measure the flowrate of input (blue
arrow) and output (red arrow) accurately, define the position of flowmeter at those
pipe and give your logical reasoning of your assesment. (define at the exact position,
example : 10 cm from inlet and 25 cm from outlet)
