1.

Define clearance volume

Clearance volume is a volume between the cylinder head and the piston top when the piston is at top dead
center (TDC). It can also be defined as the volume of cylinder that is not swept by the piston. This volume
is contained in the cylinder head gasket usually made of copper and the combustion chamber. Each time
the piston goes up, it compress the fuel air mixture in the clearance volume before ignition takes place.
2. List out the types of engine
 n-line engine.
 V-type engine.
 Horizontally opposed engine.
 H configuration engine.
 Radial engine.
 Rotary engine.

3. List out the components of jet engine

 Diffuser
 Compressors.
 Combustors.
 Turbines.
 Afterburners (reheat)
 Nozzle

4. Define after burner

 a device incorporated into the tailpipe of a turbojet engine for
injecting fuel into the hot exhaust gases and burning it to provide
extra thrust
 a device for burning or catalytically destroying unburned or partially
burned carbon compounds in exhaust

5. Why piston rings are used?

Tapered compression ring, oil scraper ring and bottom ring. Racing pistons may
only have 1. More rings more friction.
6. What is APU? what is the need?
An auxiliary power unit (APU) is a device on a vehicle that provides energy for functions
other than propulsion. They are commonly found on large aircraft and naval ships as well as
some large land vehicles
7. Define SFC with its significance ?
Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) is a measure of the fuel efficiency of
any prime mover that burns fuel and produces rotational, or shaft, power. It is
typically used for comparing the efficiency of internal combustion engines with a
shaft output. It is the rate of fuel consumption divided by the power produced.
