Assignment 3 - Final report and major project

Due date: 9:30pm, Monday 22-October-2007

This assignment carries 50% of the total mark for this course. Submission of the assignment is a
hurdle to pass the course. This assignment contains two components:
• A final report including literature review
• Completion of your major project as identified in assignment 2

Final report including literature review (15%)

The final report should include a literature review with a detailed discussion and analysis of the 3
papers identified in your assignment 2. The report should follow the structure of a typical scientific
research paper. It should include sections typically such as the following:
• Abstract – briefly describes the findings of your project
• Introduction – provides the motivation and rationale for this research. It MUST include a clear
statement of the goals of the project
• Literature Review - provides a review of the 3 papers identified in assignment 2 and indicates
where the current model fits in
• Description of the model – provides the implementation details of the proposed model
• Comparison with existing models – with other works identified via literature review
• Analysis of results – analysis of experimental results
• Discussion – further discussion of the results
• Conclusion – Conclusions relating to the goals and possible future work

The report can have up to a maximum of 12 pages, not including appendices.

Completion and Presentation of the major project (35%)

Your major project will mainly concern the implementation of the model identified in your project
proposal. The project will be assessed based on the following criteria:
• Significance of the project in the context of the identified research area
• Sophistication of the model - usefulness and interestingness
• Implementation effort - amount of coding involved (remember to comment your codes!)
• Experimental results and analysis - nicely presented experimental results and meaningful
analysis
• Report writing - with a good structure, clarity and a good logical development of ideas

Note that the last two criteria will be assessed largely from your final report, which is an overlap of the
above two assessment components.

Submission

You are expected to submit the following components of Assignment 3 in hardcopy to your lecturer, and as
well as a softcopy to turnin (turnin -c cosc1207 -p assign3 your-ZIPPED-file):
• Final report including literature review (up to 12 pages);
• Source code of the model implemented (only what you wrote).
