It is cousin Joe's desire that the gatherings continue throughout the ages.
NOTE: The Blount-Davis-Darden family opened up their annual reunions a couple of years ago to include all
Blount family descendants that had a desire to gather together. We truly appreciate their inclusivity.

Utmost thanks to all who worked very hard to raise the necessary funds to assist with the
Mega gathering. Those who supported are very much appreciated.
Sorry for any errors and omissions in the following document. We didn't receive responses
to some requests for information/photos. It takes months to do justice ─ so with only two
weeks of preparation for our very large family this is what we've managed to compile for
2015. Cousin Jessie B. Powell asked me to get on board with a family history book. I'll
always remember cousin Ora Jean Frizzell Flynn who worked so hard to keep the Blount
family history alive; cousin Mattie Carr Garrison urged me to also include the Blount Family
in my research; and my mother, Mother Mary Atkinson Joyner, who maintained some
records and kept many relationships with family members over the years. Thanks to Joe
"Bill Pork Chop" Bernard for the many photos taken over the years. There are just so many
more relatives that gave of their time and photos over the years. Many are now taking
their rest. Gloria Hazard Miller

1882 - Kinston College opened its doors in Kinston, North Carolina, however, due to financial
difficulties closed nine years later in 1891. Great-great-Grandfather Amos had worked so diligently as
a leader of the United American Free Will Baptist Church to establish it. He also established and
served as pastor of Waterside U.A.F.W. Baptist Church in Greene/Pitt, North Carolina. Did you know
that Great-grandaunt Julie Blount Kilpatrick was a student there? She eventually became a school
teacher. <><><><>
In 1920 Austin Atkinson (1902-1977) wed Lethia Johnson (1904-1975) the daughter of Rev. Oscar
Johnson and Mattie Blount Johnson; Mattie was a daughter of Amos and Jemima Edwards Blount.
After a couple of relocations from North Carolina the family settled in New Haven, Connecticut
around 1926/7. On October 14, 1934 Austin Atkinson and Lloyd Taylor were ordained Deacons in
New Haven at a service held at Saint Matthew's United American Free Will Baptist Church; the
Reverend C. L. Hills, Rev. T. O. Gorham, and Rev. W. R. Hardy officiated. Shortly thereafter Pitts
Chapel United American Free Will Baptist Church was established calling Rev. Robert W. Pitts as first
pastor. Grandfather Austin was ordained a Minister of the Gospel on September 15, 1940 at a service
held at St. Matthews Church then located at 70 Charles Street. At Pitts Chapel, grandfather Austin
offered the first prayer, led the first song and was first to preach an initial sermon. In 1942 he was
anointed and appointed pastor of Pitts Chapel U.A.F.W. Baptist Church.
There was a reorganization and the church became known as the Unified Free Will Baptist
denomination. For over the last twenty-eight years the congregation has been led by cousin and
General Bishop Elijah Davis, II son of Elijah Davis (1910-1969) and Novella Lizzie Darden Davis Royster
(1923-2012) and grandson of Rev. Wyatt Darden (1885-1981) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Blount Darden
(1887-1932) also grandson of Peter Davis (1894-1974) and Laura Outlaw Davis (1893-1935).

Granduncle William A. Blount (1881-1954) established a congregation after the turn of the last
century in New Haven, Connecticut. From around 1975 the congregation has been led by Bishop
Robert H. Stallings, Sr. and is now a non-denominational Christian fellowship. A street corner was
named in his honor last November 2014. "For several years past New Haven has had one Church of

ELDER AMOS BLOUNT, JR.
1846 - 1916
Elder Amos Blount, Jr. was born into slavery sometime around
October 1846, the son of Amos and Fannie (1870 aka Jemima
(Rountree surname is actually questionable)) Blount.
Pastor Blount was a founding member of Kinston College in Kinston, Lenoir, North Carolina. After the initial
closing of the college the building was then used as a high school for blacks and known as Atkins High School;
it was demolished in the early 1980s.
He purchased four hundred acres of land in the Beaver Dam section of Pitt County and cleared the land by
hand; the family referred to it as "Blount Town". He designed and built a home for his family there. There was
an "L" shaped structure and each room had its own fireplace. There was a large rear porch. He also had a study
where he prepared his sermons and it was filled with books. This house stood for over 100 years. Elder Blount
deeded this land as heir property and while alive he gave each of his children 10 acres.
We are told that there were twenty-two children in all, however, we only have the names of seventeen children
born to the Blounts: Sarah Frances (Blount) Hemby, Fred, Andrew, James Thomas, Elias J., Sidney (called
Cittie (Blount)) Thigpen, Alexandre, Fannie (Blount) Kilpatrick, Amos, Mattie (Blount (Johnson)) Kilpatrick,
Lula Blount Brown-Carr, Ora (Blount (Best)) Moye, William A., Florence (Blount) Spell, another son Amos,
Julie Theresa (Blount) Kilpatrick and Elizabeth (called Lizzie (Blount)) Darden.
It is possible that he was the sibling of Augustus "Gus" Blount, William Blount, Sarah Blount, Kidyard Blount,
Wiley Blount, Daniel Blount, Luke Blount, Will Blount, Wyatt Blount, Arnet Blount, Priscilla Blount, Warren
Blount, Rhody Blount, Emily Blount and Dempsey Blount.
Information passed down by daughter Ora Blount (Best) Moye, and her daughter Malissa Best Frizzell and her
granddaughter Ora Frizzell-Flynn, daughter of Elias. It has been updated by 2nd great-granddaughter Gloria
Hazard Miller through daughter Mattie Blount (Johnson) Kilpatrick.
Around 1863 she married Amos Blount the son of Amos and
Fannie (aka Jemima) Rountree Blount.
She served as first lady of the Waterside Free Will Baptist Church located in Greene County,
North Carolina.
We are told that there were twenty-two children in all, however, we only have the names of
seventeen children born to the Blounts: Sarah Frances (Blount) Hemby, Fred, Andrew, James
Thomas, Elias J., Sidney (called Cittie (Blount)) Thigpen, Alexandre, Fannie (Blount)
Kilpatrick, Amos, Mattie ( Blount) Johnson, Lula Blount Brown-Carr, Ora (Blount (Best))
Moye, William A., Florence (Blount) Spell, another son Amos, Julie Theresa (Blount)
Kilpatrick and Elizabeth (called Lizzie (Blount)) Darden.
TWO SONS OF AMOS AND JEMIMA EDWARDS BLOUNT
Ninety-six years of progress have undoubtedly reached a spiritual plateau in the city of Greenville, the county
of Pitt, the state of North Carolina, and this nation, as Mount Calvary Free Will Baptist Church continues to
reign.
The initial vision began in 1908 when Rev. Samuel Hemby, Sr. and his brother Freeman Hemby ousted the idea
of holding worship service in a bush shelter and replacing the idea with purchasing land to build a church.
Fulfilling their vision and completing the sanctuary, the brothers named the church Hemby's Chapel after Rev.
Samuel Hemby. The church was located on Sheppard Street, in the Perkins Town section, West Greenville.
The wooden-framed, one-room structure was comfortably accommodating, serving as a new location of praise
for its worshippers.
Due to Rev. Hemby's death, his reign as pastor ended in 1916. Rev. Fred Gardner was subsequently elected as
pastor in 1916, serving until 1926. In 1926, Rev. Kelly Artis was elected and served briefly as the pastor due to
his passing two years later. Rev. Fred Gardner, a former pastor of Mount Calvary returned to the church and
served as the pastor until 1928.
Under the leadership of Rev. Fred Gardner, the church's name was changed to Mount Calvary in the year of
1927.
Numerous pioneers have labored during the construction and spiritual and physical growth of the church. In
1929, Rev. E. M. Hill was elected as pastor of Mount Calvary Church.
During the Depression in the 1930's, the membership organized fund-raising activities to remain economically
afloat. During that period, Mount Calvary Church was vacant over a year due to construction of a new church.
During construction, services were held at Greenville Industrial High School, then located on Fleming Street,
and at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, then located at 13th and Railroad Streets. Worship services
were non-conflicting because Cornerstone held services first and third Sundays, while Mount Calvary's services
were held second and fourth Sundays of the month.
In 1937, Mount Calvary Church was completed and the flock relocated to the Hudson and Ward Streets
location. Rev. Hill served as the pastor for the following twenty-six year. Under his direction, the church
implemented various new ministries within the church.
Rev. Hill's health began to decline n 1954, thus forcing him into retirement. Two years later, in the year of
1956, Rev. Hill passed to his eternal home.
In 1956, Rev. W. L. Jones was elected pastor of Mount Calvary Church. His primary agenda focused on
Christian Education, Vacation Bible School, and young adult organizations. Moreover, Rev. Jones' dedication,
input, and overall involvement positively impacted the membership, which resulted in the improvement of
musical programs, ministries, and organizations.
In addition to the dedication orchestrated by Rev. Jones, various individuals have played a vital role in the
improvement and spiritual growth of Mount Calvary Church. In 1984, Bishop Jones was called home to live
eternally with the Lord.
The Renaissance continued in 1984 with Rev. T. L. Davis, the elected pastor. Serving until 1986, he channeled
his youthful energy into physical improvement, enhancing growth, and appointing new Mothers to the Board.
In 1986, Elder Elmer Jackson, Jr., was elected as pastor of Mount Calvary Church. His experience, dedication,
and vision were an asset to the church. Challenging the physical aspects of the building, coupled with guiding
the membership into a restoration of faith, the church spiritually benefitted, in spite of a prior membership
split. In 1991, the Doctor of Divinity Degree was conferred upon Elder Jackson. Various accomplishments
have been mastered under Dr. Jackson's administration. In 1992, Dr. Jackson envisioned a new sanctuary.
With the prayers of Saints and others, the vision became a reality.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new sanctuary on November 14, 1992, resulted in the completion of
the new sanctuary months later. On Sunday, August 8, 1993, final memories of the old church included a
prayer followed by a motorcade departure to the church's new location, 411 Watauga Avenue. The first
sermon in the new church was "Praise God, We Made It Over." The worship celebration included a sermon
filled with praise and thanksgiving, which resulted in the direction of six souls to Christ.
Mount Calvary's first guest churches, Moye's Chapel and Warren Chapel, celebrated the afternoon worship
service that climaxed in voices of praise. Pre-dedicatory services were rendered the week of August 16-21 by
various ministered and their congregations. Following these services were the first Quarterly and Communion
services. The church added Mount Calvary Christian Daycare Center.
Due to the death of Dr. Jackson in November of 1999, Elder Henry Brown, Sr., a native of Baltimore, Maryland,
was elected pastor, from 1999 to present, Bishop Brown has celebrated five spirit-filled and miraculous years
of numerical and spiritual growth as the pastor. Additionally, he was bestowed the very high honor of being
consecrated a "Bishop" under the umbrella of Kingdom Empowerment Fellowship, Inc., of which he is a
"founding Father."
Married to the former Cariethea Walker, Bishop Brown and his wife are the parents of two sons and one
daughter.
Bishop Brown continues to lead the church and the community in a positive direction, having instituted
several ministries, organizations, programs, renovations, educational opportunities, worship services, radio
broadcasts, and various other contributions. Bishop Brown also started Mr. Sinai Christian Center in
Pollocksville, N.C., in 2003.
Recently, Bishop Brown was honored at the Best-Irons Humanitarian Awards at the Hilton in Greenville for his
service to the community.
Pastor Brown's motto is "Serving God by Serving God's people." He is passionate regarding the souls of God's
people, and his vision includes winning as many souls to Christ as possible
It should be noted that two Greenville, North Carolina, churches are offsprings of Mount Calvary Free Will
Baptist Church, The churches are Canaan Free Will Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Shirley
Daniels, and Progressive Free Will Baptist Church, ministered by Pastor T. L. Davis.
As Mount Calvary Church continues to make history, the reflection of our forefathers who have amassed a
wealth of contributions to the church and community will undoubtedly remain unnoticed.

REVEREND AMOS JUNIOR BLOUNT, III
03/26/1886-07/22/1969
Obituary and Home-Going Service 07/28/1969
On Tuesday, July 22, 1969, 12:20 p.m. at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, the Rev. Amos
Junior Blount, III of 162 Bassett Street departed this life after a brief illness. He was 83 years of age and was
born in Greene County, North Carolina on March 26, 1886. Amos was the son of parents who had been born
into the system of slavery, the late (U.A.F.W. Baptist) Moderator Amos, II and Mrs. Jemima Edwards Blount.
He is believed to be the 16th child of 20 children, the last son and the last to survive all of his siblings.
Reverend Blount began preaching at an early age. After residing in several states he relocated to New Haven
in 1936 where he served the Lord through several ministries. On September 21, 1910, he married Mary Daniel
in Greenville, North Carolina. Years later in New Haven he met and married Florence Stancil-Meeks and after
her passing he married Aronia Saunderson Fenner. At the time of his death the two were divorced.
Reverend Blount operated his own Ash and Refuse Removal business. He was affiliated with various
community organizations; he was a member of the Odd Fellows and a 33rd Degree Ancient Free and Accepted
Mason. He was self-employed, a loving, kind and understanding husband and father, and a devoted uncle
and family member. He was a very good counselor and would often sit and listen to the problems of others
and offer advice with direction; he was always there to encourage.
He was heroic - around 1919 he rescued his niece, Lethia Johnson from a terrible house fire, saving her life,
she would soon after marry Austin Atkinson. He was most certainly well-loved by all family members. He
loved traveling especially taking long trips. Granduncle was always ambitious and appeared physically
youthful. He possessed an excellent, clear, and vivid memory until his end.
He leaves 11 devoted children and step-children: sons, Mr. Amos J. Blount, IV of Baltimore, Maryland, Harry
Blount and Private William Henry Blount of the United States Army; Lester C. and Raymond L. Fenner;
daughters: Mrs. Genevieve Carmon of Baltimore, Maryland, Mrs. Carrie "Clara" Belle Hopkins, Mrs. Roberta
Ashley, Mrs. Maggie Petaway, Shirley Blount and Lena Fenner, all of New Haven. There are 34 grandchildren,
47 great-grandchildren, great-great-grands, plus a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
Amos was predeceased by nine sisters: Sarah Frances Blount Hemby, Sidney "Cittie" Blount Thigpen, Fannie
Blount Kilpatrick, Mattie Blount Johnson-Kilpatrick, Lulu Blount Brown-Carr, Ora Blount Best-Moye, Florence
Blount Spell, Julie Theresa Blount Kilpatrick, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Blount Darden; and nine brothers (only six
names known): Fred Blount, Andrew Blount, James Thomas Blount, Elias Blount, Alexander Blount, the
Reverend William A. Blount (a founding member and former pastor of the Church of God and Saints of Christ
in New Haven).
His favorite songs were, "Precious Memories", "Precious Lord Take My Hand", and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."
Some of these he sang and hummed softly while on his hospital bed and just before his passing.

JulieAnne JeCora Blount Kilpatrick Bell was born in the great year
of 1995 and raised in the wonderful city of New Haven, CT. I am a proud
descendant of George Kilpatrick and Julie Blount Kilpatrick. Both of my
parents went on to be with the Lord in my early years. I was raised by my
grandmother, Jessie Bell Powell, and grew up with my own army of four
older brothers. With guidance and prayer I made it through 12 years in
the New Haven school system and graduated from James Hillhouse High
School in 2013. While in high school I had the opportunity to serve as the
Battalion Executive Officer in the JROTC program and the President/Drum
Major of the marching and concert band. Meaning I was second in charge
of over 100 students and first in charge of 70 students. I was proudly
known as the "girl with many hats". since a youngster my ultimate goal
has been to graduate college, and I will. My goal is in process. My
motivation is knowing that no one in my immediate family has yet to attain a degree. I must break tradition. I
now attend The Lincoln University of PA, the FIRST degree granting HBCU in the country. I am a junior
majoring in English Liberal Arts with a double minor in Sociology and Political Science. I currently hold a 3.3
cumulative GPA. This coming semester I was given the opportunity to e a Peer Tutor for over 6 courses and a
Student Instructor for a Computer Programming course. I am also an active member of 6 organizations, one
being the Praise Dance Ministry in which I was recently appointed the Vice President/Co-Choreographer.
After graduating in 2017, I plan to attend Columbia University Law School in NY studying Entertainment Law.
My story may not be perfect but it certainly molded my life to make me the strong independent woman I am
today. I am grateful for how far the Lord has brought me, but He isn't through with me yet.
