Discussion of Scenario

Given Scenario:

“School network LAN

A school wants to have their 4 computers labs with Internet connection. Each lab having 26 computers
that directly connected to each other and to the Internet. Each lab is aligned vertically at each floor
from ground to fourth floor. The main Internet connection is located 500 meters away at the school's
office room. The labs are used every day where students access School Net system (online learning).”

Network infrastructure for:

• 4 Computers Labs (vertically aligned)

• 26 Computers (PC) per lab – Wired LAN connection
• 500-meter interbuilding internet access
• School Net system (online learning)

Overview solution:

• Network port for each PC’s

• 48-Ports Gigabit Switch each lab
• Fiber-optic cable as interbuilding backbone
• Fast & Reliable Internet Access (Dedicated Internet/Lease Line)
Structured Networks Cabling Project RFP 6
UMP NETWORK SOLUTION SDN BHD (GROUP 1)__________________________________________________

Analysis of the current and future need:

Based on the situation chosen, we were instructed to design and propose the network
architecture that will support the main requirement of the situation need which is 4 new computer
labs with active internet connection. Since this is school network which accommodate hundreds to
thousands of users. We need to follow the best practice in designing good network architecture1. So,
we will implement three-tier LAN design which provide these 4-priciples:

1. Hierarchy: Facilitates understanding the role of each device at every tier

2. Modularity: Allows seamless network expansion and integrated service enablement on an
on-demand basis
3. Resiliency: Satisfies user expectations for keeping the network always on
4. Flexibility: Allows intelligent traffic load sharing by using all network resources

For this project we need to assess the requirement from front end to back end. The front-end
requirement is internet access for 26 PC’s for each lab and there are 4 lab which means at least need
to provide internet access to 104 PC’s. Then start to assess it backward, since the requirement needed
for each lab is located vertically in vertically at each floor so, the best way is to use on switch for each
floor. The situation also mention that internet access sauce is located 500 meters from office, using
UTP as backbone cabling for is no longer an option. Therefore, fiber optic cables will be used as
backbone cabling from office the main distribution frame (MDF) at Block X. As now should already
have three-tier LAN, Core as core switch at the main office (Equipment Room), distribution layer we
be handle by MDF the ground floor and access switch at each floor. All that will cover the hierarchy
part of the design practice. Next, is modularity also will help of the future us of the design. For that,
addition requirement will be added as a reserved. Example since the requirement needed for 26 PC’s
per lab, we will add 4 more as a reserved. Then each faceplate will have at least 2 Rj45 ports. In
addition of that wireless access point (WAP) will allow device to have same access as PC if all the ports
are full. The move on into resiliency, in order always keep the network always up and running there
are two ways will be implemented, one is to use 2 Internet Service Provider (ISP) as a backhaul which
great is one ISP having issue and the second one is the of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) will
become in handy if any power failure occurs towards the main power supply. Last but not least,
flexibility issue for this project should be solve by using the Load balancer that allow traffic load sharing
since the school network resources not will be use 24 hours just for labs. So, load balancer will allow

those networks resources will be allocated to the much use at the time where lab is not being use for
example after 6 PM the network resources will be redirect to hostel that much needed at the time.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, we able to solve situation given which to provide network infrastructure for
4 computer lab which each lab having 26 computers for the school. This project uses fiber
optic cable interbuilding backbone that can have supported up to 1Gbps the maximum to
transfer data. Then each lab we use wired LAN connection to connect to the network. We use
48-Ports Gigabit Switch each lab that can that have plenty more empty ports for future needs.

By developing this project, its teach how to work together with our team that everyone was
given the task to complete the project. Group members need to solve the problem and task
that have been given from executive manager and make every one of group members
responsible to do the task and finish their work. This project will be given advantages to the
student where students can access School Net System (online learning).

For the LAN connection, our group uses UTP CAT 6 for Vertical Cabling for each level. We use
Multimode Fiber interbuilding backbone that can transfer two-way data. Multi-WAN Router
is used for the server and to provide 3-tier hierarchical access our group use core switch
distributing switch access switch. Wireless control uses for control and manages WAP.
Network rack uses for stack all mount rack compatible device in one place at Equipment Room
(ER).

Last but not least, group member needs to build horizontal cabling each of the group
members. This gives the experience to group member so our group can learn and know how
to create and construct the network. This project gives much new information to our group
that we don’t know. We can apply this skill for our future.
