This document summarizes a study on the perceptions of community members about the role of nurses at the outpatient clinic of the Tanjung Puri Community Health Center in Sintang, Kalimantan Barat. The study found that the community generally had a positive perception of the role of nurses as providers (80.79% good) and educators (87.17% good). However, around half of respondents incorrectly thought nurses should diagnose diseases and prescribe medication. The conclusion is that while the community views of nurses' roles are generally positive, some still incorrectly believe nurses can diagnose and treat patients independently.

ABOUT ROLE OF NURSES AT OUT PATIENT OF TANJUNG PURI COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER, SINTANG, KALIMANTAN BARAT

ABSTRACT
Background: To keep professionalism, particularly role of nurses at out patient of
Community Health Center requires commitment of nurses, decision makers and support from the community as users of health service. One factor that should be considered is perception of the community as users of health service about role of nurses. The community affects service provided by health professionals, in this case, nurses. If the community still has wrong perception, about nurses, especially those working at out patient, the service they provide may be affected. Objective: To find out perception of community as users of health service about role of nurses as executives and instructors at out patient of Community Health Center. Method: This was a descriptive study with cross sectional design. Population were as many as 169 people with 45 people as samples accidentally taken to fulfill questionnaires, whereas as many as 5 respondents were taken for interview. Subject of the study were the community who visited out patient of Tanjung Puri, Community Health Center, Sintang. The study was conducted in the second and third weeks of August 2005. Result: Result of quantitative analysis showed that: (a) perception about role of nurses as executives was good (80.79%), but in an item whereby nurses should determine disease and give medication was inadequate (48.9%); (b) perception about role of nurses as instructors was good (87.17%). Result of qualitative analysis showed that perception of community as users of health service about role of nurses in general was good. Perception about role of nurses as executives was also good, however many still considered that nurses should give medication to patients. They also had good perception about role of nurses as instructors. Conclusion: Perception of community as users of health service about role of nurses in general was good, about role of nurses as executives was good, however in an item that stated nurses at out patient of Community Health Center determined disease and gave medication, the community perceived them as role of nurses. Perception of community as users of health service about role of nurses as instructors was good.
