1 Overview
1.1 Introduction
With the rapid development of mobile communication technology, subscribers today are
not only satisfied with the basic voice service. They demand more and more data
services. The Big Data era has arrived. Researches show that 90% of the data traffic
occurs indoors, but the traditional indoor distribution system based on passive
components and feeders are suffering from a lot of bottlenecks in providing high-quality
data services.
The traditional indoor distribution system is mostly based on the coaxial cable distribution
system, which has the following problems:
Networks of different standards share the same distribution system. As a result, the
output power cannot be matched due to the band difference.
Many passive devices cannot be monitored end to end, which brings great
difficulties and costs to operation and maintenance.
There are lots of troubles in feeders and antennas installation, such as entering
property buildings, long construction period and high costs. Lots of pipe resources
are difficult to enter the rooms.
Thus, with the new demands for communication network construction, the active
distribution system solution QCell has opened a new prospect, which solves the
problems described above in a certain range.
There are three basic components for the active distribution system QCell solution: BBU
(Baseband Unit), pBridge (Pico RRU Bridge Unit) and pRRU (Pico Remote Radio Unit).
The system architecture and function modules are shown in the figure below:

BBU is the same as the BBU used in macro sites. It processes modulation and
demodulation of the baseband signals, provides CPRI fiber connections to pBridge.
pBridge implements the CPRI optic and electric conversion, I/Q data combination,
and distribution. It also provides PoE and SyncE functions for pRRUs.
pRRU implements digital baseband signal and RF conversion, filters and amplifies
RF signals.
MAU converts other vendors’ 2G/3G RF signal to I/Q data, and distributes it to
pRRU by pBridge.
ZTE ZXSDR R8129 is Pico remote radio unit (pRRU) of QCell solution. The document is
designed to give an overview of the characteristics of R8129, its key benefits, the
architecture, functionality and services, as well as the system capabilities.
1.3 Benefits
Easy Deployment
With compact design, built-in antenna, and using Ethernet cable PoE for power
supply, R8129 can be deployed flexibly and quickly.
It is managed by the same unified EMS as macro station; every node is visible
and manageable.
High Performance
Synergy
pRRU (R8129), pBridge (PB1120A) and BBU together constitute an active distributed
system indoors. The typical application scenarios are shown below.

The software architecture of R8129 can be divided into two layers: SDR Unified Platform
Software and Application Software. The architecture is shown in the following figure:

System
The Operating and Maintenance (OAM) sub-system is the application layer. Its main
functions are software downloading, configuration, management, system maintenance
and measurement.
The Operation Support Sub-system (OSS) is the supporting layer in this entire
framework. It is a hardware independent layer that provides basic functions such as
scheduling, timer, and memory management, communication, sequencing control,
monitoring, alarming and logging.
The Board Support Package (BSP) provides device driver & initialization and supports
basic functions like alarming and monitoring. It also provides the related interfaces and
services to the Operating System.
2.4 Functionality
R8129 is the remote radio unit of active distributed system. It transfers (sending or
receiving) 3G/4G signals with pBridge via the one RJ45 interface. Its functions are as

R8129 has one RJ45 Ethernet socket (POE). The RJ45s are at the bottom of the
equipment.
The R8129 (IA) with built-in antenna has no extra SMA interface. The R8129 (EA) has
extra SMA interface on the side of equipment, which is connects to external directional
antenna.
There are RUN and ALM indicator lights on the top center of R8129.
The details of the indicator lights are described in the following table.
Note: All the indicators will be off, after the pRRU is powered up 15 minutes.
