EE 251 Fault Studies

Prelim Requirement (Part 2) 11-12-2017

1. The “system” shown is composed of a 50Hz, 50 MVA, 13.2kV star-grounded alternator which is
connected to a line through a delta/wye transformer. The positive, negative and zero sequence
impedances of the alternator are j0.1, j0.1 and j0.5 p.u. respectively. The transformer rated at
13.2kV delta/120kV wye, 50 MVA with star solidly grounded has the sequence impedances of
X”=X2=X0=j0.1 p.u. each. For each of the unsymmetrical faults shown (Figures 1.a to 1.d),
determine:
a. The fault current, IF, at the fault point (both p.u. and actual values)
b. The line currents Ia , Ib and Ic (both p.u. and actual values)
c. The line voltages Vag , Vbg and Vcg (both p.u. and actual values)

2. Discussion questions:
a. Which one do you think is the most severe fault? Why?
b. Which one of them will be the most severe for the network equipment?
c. Does the location (distance and impedance to sources) of the fault increase/decrease the
severity of the disturbance? Why?
