Abstract
Background: Heart surgery is widely regarded as one of the most important medical advances of
the twentieth century. CPB to facilitate the performance of open heart surgery, but also resulted
in a systemic inflammatory reaction. Inflammation caused by CPB due to heparinized blood and
nonendotelial surface.
Aim: To determine the relationship of usage duration of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with
increased leukocyte postoperative open heart surgery in H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan.
Material and Methods: This study used a descriptive analytic design and cross-sectional
approach. The samples are part of the population with the data of CPB usage duration and
leukocyte values that meet the inclusion criteria. The data collected will be processed and
analyzed with Pearson correlation.
Results: A total of 89 patients, patients who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria as much as
57 subjects (70.37%). Increased levels of leukocytes on day 1 and 2 with leukocyte levels of 17
439 and 20 942. The decrease of leukocytes on day three and four, namely 18 642 and 14 549. In
the analysis ofPearson Correlation seen that there is a relationship between leukocyte count
difference with duration usage of CPB.
Conclusions: The association of CPB usage duration with leukocytes is seen greatest in increase
in the third day and smallest on the first day, despite the highest levels of leukocytes were found
on day II.
