THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND THE INCIDENCES OF

PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS IN NORTH SULAWESI BASED ON


RISKESDAS 2010 IN THE MEDICAL AND ISLAM REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Background: Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis which


can attack many organ especially the lungs. Nutritional status can be related to the incidences of
pulmonary tuberculosis. Islam’s common review about how to choose the healthy food and prevent
the infectious disease.
Objective : To identify the association between nutritional status and the incidences of pulmonary
tuberculosis in North Sulawesi based on Riskesdas 2010.
Method: This was correlative descriptive study method. Samples were taken with total sampling
from all Riskesdas 2010 respondents in North Sulawesi aged over ≥ 15 years up to 2.319
respondents. This study used univariate and bivariate analysis method.
Result : The result of this study shows that there are 123 respondents (5.3%) that are categorized as
underweight (BMI <18.5) and 8 of them have pulmonary tuberculosis, 1376 respondents (59.8%)
are categorized as normal body weight (BMI ≥18.5 - <25) and 45 of them have pulmonary
tuberculosis, 317 respondents (13.8%) are categorized as overweight (BMI ≥25 – 27) and 8 of the
have pulmonary tuberculosis, and 481 respondents (21%) are categorized as obese (BMI >27) and
3 of them have pulmonary tuberculosis. This study acquired significancy value of p = 0.001 ( 0.001
< 0.05) which shows that there are correlations between nutritional status and the incidence of
pulmonary tuberculosis.
Conclusion : There are correlation between nutritional status and the incidences of pulmonary
tuberculosis in North Sulawesi according to the data provided by the 2010 Riskesdas. Islam teaches
us to pick foods which are not only halal but also thayyib or in other word good for the body, so that
the body recieves its right. Islam also teaches about prevention of diseases by avoiding places where
diseases are an epidemic and for those who are sick to avoid traveling so that the disease(s) they are
carrying along are not spread. The same thing goes with tuberculosis because it is possible to be
spread through air droplet, so we have to protect ourselves in order to prevent the transmission of
the disease, by reducing contacts with those who are infected or with other means of preventions.
