Dartmouth is a private Ivy league university founded by Rev. Eleazar Wheelock, a congressional

minister in Connecticut. The campus occupies roughly 269 acres located in Hanover, New Hampshire, on

the bank of the Connecticut River and holds around 6,381 students 3,252 of them men, and 3,129 of them

women. The charter to build Dartmouth was signed in 1769 by the Royal Governor of New Hampshire,

John Wentworth. It was originally planned to be an institute to educate native americans and has more

native alumni than all other ivy league institutions combined. The school became coeducational in 1972,

the same year that it affirmed the founding mission of Dartmouth was to educate natives.

For the past four consecutive years, Dartmouth has been identified as number one in

undergraduate teaching by U.S. News & World Report. Dartmouth is currently home to 4,200

undergraduates in the liberal arts programs and 1,900 graduate students in over 25 advanced degree arts

and sciences programs. Within the university, Dartmouth also had three famous and decorated colleges,

the Tuck School of business which was the world’s first school of management, the Thayer school of

Engineering, which was one of the nation’s first professional schools for engineering, and the Geisel

school of Medicine, which is the nation’s fourth-oldest school of medicine.

Average scores for admission includes: anywhere from a 670-780 on the Sat reading portion with

a 717 being the mean score, a 670-790 on the Sat writing portion (mean score of 722), a 680-780 on the

Sat math portion (mean being 723), and anywhere from a 20-34 on the Act. GPA is not a heavily

considered factor in the Dartmouth admissions process as it is simply viewed as one of many indicators as

to who will continue to do well in college and not a deciding factor on an individual’s intelligence.

Tuition for one year at Dartmouth is $71,827, plus $1,499 for the strongly encouraged computer

service package and a mandatory additional $2,895 for health insurance. Financial aid is available to

every student, but there is an application process. It is recommended that every student applying for

financial aid applies along with their general application to the institution. Reapplication for financial aid

is annually. Roughly $95 million were awarded in scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Dartmouth scholarships can award anywhere from $1,000 to $50,000 to a student and the university

offers over 750 endowed scholarships. Outside scholarships do not reduce the amount award in a

Dartmouth scholarship unless all other need-based components of the award have already been reduced.

The top five majors for undergraduates at Dartmouth are Economics, Government, History,

Engineering, Sciences, Psychology. Dartmouth offers many off-campus-education programs such as

foreign study programs (FSPs) which allow students to live with local families in the country that is

“heart and home” of the approved field study. Dartmouth also allows for students to spend a term enrolled

in a partner institution for full academic credit. These institutions range from Seoul to Milan and San

Diego to Atlanta.

Credit transfer programs at Dartmouth allow any student to redeem up to four credits toward their

Dartmouth degree granted the credits were earned at a partner institution.

Double majoring is possible at Dartmouth, but to apply for a double major a student must submit

a degree plan for each major with the understanding that no individual class may count as credit towards

both majors. These plans must both be approved by the respective chairs of the departments. Any student

choosing to do so may submit a plan to add another major to their education while they are working

toward their pre-approved major. This plan is sent in for approval at any point during the year.

When planning a trip to Dartmouth, unless you have an old soul or an deep interest in museums

and antique malls, make sure you have data for netflix. Located around Dartmouth is the Hood Museum

of Art, the Hopkins Center for the Arts, Biondi Park, Von Bargen’s Jewelry, Nugget Theater, Storrs Pond

Recreation Center, and the Quechee Gorge Village of Vermont Antique Mall, among other things.

When it comes to career services, the small colleges inside of the university all have a designated

office that can match students to available internships/fellowships/occupations pertaining to their major

and the courses they have completed.

When it comes to clubs, you name it, Dartmouth has it. They even have a freestyle rap group for

undergrads. Other clubs include and Argentine Tango Society, Step team, Creative gaming club, and

Spoon, a gourmet food society. Greek life is available to all sophomores entering their winter term and

any point after. There are 26 college recognized greek houses on campus.

Dartmouth has a lottery in place for students to select which hall and dorm they will live in. 90%

of all undergraduate students live in one of the six halls, The Allen House, East Wheelock House, North

Park House, School House, South House, or the West House. Most of these halls include two room

doubles with a few singles. To request a roommate there is an application to fill out when you apply for

on-campus living lottery number. Also filled out on your application is a separate section if you would

like a substance free living experience. All dorms are expected to comply to the school’s alcohol and drug

use policies. All dorms include a twin size bed for each occupant along with a desk and bookcase and a

television complete with a whole 60 channels! Not permitted in dorms are heated appliances, lamps 100

watts or over, air conditioners and heaters, weapons, candles, and more. Highly recommended that any

student moving into a Dartmouth Dorm reads the “Pack” and “No-Pack” lists before packing.

When it comes to the most important part, food obviously, Dartmouth offers multiple

“SmartChoice” and “BlockChoice” plans. Smart choice dining plans determine a set amount of meals per

week while block choice plans determine a set amount of meals per term. The student swipes a card when

purchasing a meal at the Class of 1953 Commons (the all-you-care-to-eat buffet) to count it as one from

their meal plan.
