CHAPTER 1
(Introduction)

Background of the study:

In every country, even in the most progressive ones, we will always find people affected
by homelessness.
Homelessness is generally termed as the condition of people without a permanent dwelling, such
as a house or apartment. People who are homeless are most often unable to acquire and maintain
regular, safe, secure and adequate housing.
But homelessness is more than that, homelessness is a more complex phenomenon, it is more
than a lack of shelter or a place to live in.
Most times, people affected by homelessness gets ignored by the many people that passes them
by in the street, and this is exactly one of the most critical problem regarding the research, our
act of ignoring them or our lack of care for them cause us ignorance over their situation and
perspective.
Very few studies have asked people who are homeless about their own personal accounts in
order to gain a greater understanding of the causes for homelessness and their perspective about
it.
Thus, in light of the fact of these things, the researcher conducted this study, to answer the
questions regarding to the aforementioned details and to know their views and stand about their
situations and experiences.
Basic Questionnaires:
1. How long have you been homeless
2. What is your everyday normal routine
3. Do you feel safe, If not why?
4. How do you think do other people perceives you?
5. What do you think is the cause of your homelessness?
6. This week, what’s the best thing that has happened to you?
7. In the future, do you have any plans or goals?
8. Do you have any additional things to say?
9. Respondent’s background
a. ( age, sex, name [optional] )

Statement of the problem:

1. This study aims to answer the following questions:
a. What is the perspective of homeless people to their situation?
b. How can this research help the homeless people in their community?
c. How do homeless people think other people perceives them?
d. What are the possible causes of homelessness based on the answer of the
respondents?
2. This study is conducted by the researchers in order to know the following things about
the respondents:
a. Views about being homeless
b. View about other people
c. Being secured
d. Cause of homelessness
e. Hopes and expectations
Significance of the study:
The ultimate goal of this research is to inform readers and people about the views,
perception and the situation of the homeless people in our communities in order for us to further
find ways and strategies on how to help them.
It is hoped that the readers will gain greater insight regarding homelessness and greater
understanding and empathy for the people affected by it.
The development and research about the understanding of homeless people’s perceptions about
homelessness may provide insights that will support community based efforts to reduce
homelessness.
These perceptions and the insights gained from them could aid in the creation of helping
environments that helps the homeless people in a sense of safety and comfort and provide for
them an alternative to the normal things they experience in our neglectful society.

Assumption of the study:

In this study, it is possible, that we may learn more things about homelessness and
homeless people. We may learn its cause and effect in our society and how we can help the
people affected by it in our community.
It is possible that we may gain a deeper understanding for them that can help in our attempts in
finding ways on how to help them.
Due to the fact that the homeless people are mostly ignored, and due to the fact that there are
scarcely any research done to attend to their views, most people don’t get to know more
information about them especially in our communities. This studies aims to be of help to that
problem, and give light to other people’s mind about the problem of homelessness in our country
and society.
This study, if furthermore researched and delved into, could give light to the situations of our
fellow people that is affected by homelessness.

Scope and limitation:

This study does not cover up on ways on how to solve homelessness, if further studied,
research and experimented, it might help in ways on how to solve it, but it does not in any way,
cover it up, it’s only aim is to know the perspective of homeless people, their thoughts and their
feeling on being affected by homelessness.
This study and research is also only limited to respondents found in the city of Caloocan, at
Bagong barrio. The researcher did not survey homeless people from outside of this place’s
jurisdiction or territory, and is only limited to the number of 3 respondents, due to limited time
that the research can gather up at their respected free time.
It is also done and researched by student who has no professional experience from the
researching field so there might be spots of error and limitations that might be apparent through
research, nonetheless, the study might help regarding the homeless people’s situation and those
who wants to conduct a further investigation and study for the said topic regarding the
perspective of homeless people.

CHAPTER 3
(Method and procedures)

Methods of research:
Before the researchers conducted the research, they first tried to learn what instruments
and materials they would need for it to be done, and then after that, they gathered it all and
prepared it as to how it will be chronologically used and made.
One of the materials they prepared for this research are the questionnaires for the respondents or
the interviewees.
A variety of questions were made for their questionnaires before they did their research, and
before they did those questions, they researched about the things and words that would be
appropriate for the questions so that they may not offend or hurt anyone in their survey and to
also avoid subjectivity.
After they made the questionnaires, they then searched for respondents in the streets and bridges
of Edsa and Bagong barrio, after that, they recorded the interaction of interviewing the
respondents using their cellphones and pen and paper.
Then, they researched more in the net regarding the topic of their research to add more
information, they gathered it all, arranged it and then finalized in the form of the thesis research
paper.

Description of research instrument:
The research instrument is one of the most important components of a study, there are
many types of research instruments you can use such as survey, test, questionnaire, etc…
The research instrument used for this study is a questionnaire. A questionnaire is a set of printed
or written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical
study. There are two types of questionnaire that can be used, a close-ended and an open ended
type of questionnaire.
The type of questionnaire that is used for this research is an open-ended type due to the fact that
it uses questions that allow the target audience to voice their feelings and notions freely are
called open-format questions or open-ended questions. These questions are not based on pre-
determined responses, giving respondents an opportunity to express what they feel is right, and
often provide real, perceptional, and at times, startling proposals. Open-ended questions placed at
the end of a questionnaire tend to draw accurate feedback and suggestions from respondents as
well.

To sum it up, the researcher used an open ended type of questionnaire as a research instrument
for this study.

Data gathering procedure:

In this research, the researcher used 2 methods of data gathering procedure, one of them
is Data mining and the other one is through interviewing.
What is data gathering procedure? Data gathering procedure is the process of gathering and
measuring information on targeted variables in an established systematic fashion, which then
enables one to answer relevant questions and evaluate outcomes.
There are different data gathering procedures that you can use for a term paper. It will depend on
your convenience and the ease in gathering the required details that you can use for the research
results
The researcher used data mining in this gathering procedure. Data mining is gathering data from
resource materials where data and numerical figures are already tallied and presented. Usually,
you can find data among research institutions and academic centers. Data mining is simply using
an already published set of data, specifically, the researchers used google to get more data for the
thesis using data mining.
And then on the other hand, the researchers also used Interviewing to produce results.
An interview is "a formal face-to-face meeting, especially, one arranged for the assessment of
the qualifications of an applicant, as for employment or admission.... A conversation, as one
conducted by a reporter, in which facts, or statements are elicited from another." (The American
Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition)
The interview is the primary technique for information gathering during the systems analysis
phases of a development project. It is a skill which must be mastered by every analyst. The
interviewing skills of the analyst determine what information is gathered, and the quality and
depth of that information. Interviewing, observation, and research are the primary tools of the
analyst.
Interviewing is another example of a data gathering procedure. One benefit that you can get from
this process is that you can actually gather raw and reliable data direct from your subjects.
Although it is time consuming, you can still have very credible result from this data gathering
procedure.
Out of the two option above that was used in the research, interviewing is the more dominantly
used data gathering procedure.
In conclusion, the researchers used to data gathering procedure in this research, which is, data
mining and interviewing.
