Fuel

Fuel tank capacity: 38 (10.0 US gal , 8.4 Imp gal)

Turn the engine switch ON and check the fuel meter.

The fuel meter will stop indicating if you leave the engine switch to ON
for more than 15 seconds. Turn the engine switch to OFF once and
then turn the switch to ON and check the fuel meter.

Refill the fuel tank to the upper level if necessary. Do not fill the fuel
tank above the upper level mark.

Use diesel fuel.

Do not use fouled or mixed diesel fuel.
Avoid getting dirt, dust or water in the fuel tank.
After refueling, be sure to tighten the fuel filler cap firmly.

Diesel fuel is flammable and explosive under certain conditions.

Refuel in a well ventilated area with the engine stopped.
Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area where the
engine is refueled or where diesel fuel is stored.
Do not overfill the tank, and make sure the filler cap is securely
closed after refueling.

According to season and ambient temperature, a different grade of
diesel fuel should be used. The fuel might freeze and prevent the
engine from starting if summer fuel is used in winter. If winter fuel is
used in summer, it could result in a lack of power. Be sure to use the
proper grade of diesel fuel which complies with the ambient
temperature.
Refill the fuel frequently, especially in winter. Water could
accumulate if there is much air in the fuel tank. We recommend that
you refill after each use of the generator.

Air bleeding (Restart of the engine after the fuel has run out)

The generator is equipped with an automatic air bleeding system.

Set the automatic throttle switch to ON position, make sure that fuel is
supplied to the fuel filter, and start the engine without load.

Light blue exhaust gas is seen while bleeding air. Keep the engine
running, and the exhaust smoke color leans and the engine speed
stabilizes after the air bleeding.

MAX (UPPER LEVEL)

MIN (LOWER LEVEL)

3. If there is no coolant in the reserve tank, the cooling system should

be checked for leaks and repaired if necessary. Coolant must then be
added to the radiator and reserve tank.

Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The coolant
is under pressure and severe scalding could result.

Wait until the engine is cool, then turn the radiator cap
counterclockwise until stops. DO NOT PRESS DOWN WHILE
TURNING THE CAP. After any remaining pressure has been relieved,
remove the cap by pressing down and again turning it
counterclockwise. Add enough coolant to fill the radiator, and
reinstall the cap. Be sure to tighten it securely. Fill the reserve tank
up to the MAX mark with the engine cold.

Coolant Recommendation

Use high quality ethylene glycol antifreeze that is specifically

formulated for use in aluminum engines. Mix the antifreeze with low-
mineral drinking water or distilled water.
A 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and water is
recommended for most temperature and provides good corrosion
protection. A higher concentration of antifreeze decrease cooling
efficiency and is recommended only if additional protection against
freezing is needed. A concentration of less than 40% antifreeze will not
provide proper corrosion protection.

The use of unsuitable antifreeze, hard water, or salt water may cause
corrosion damage that will shorten the life of the engine.

Fuel Filter

1. Open the maintenance lid (see page 19 ).

2. Inspect the fuel filter for dirt, water, or deposit, clean the fuel filter if
necessary (see page 43 ).

Warm up the engine for 2 or 3 minutes.

Warm-up stabilizes engine rotation and eliminates voltage

fluctuation, warm up the engine oil and lubricates relevant parts,
reduces abrasion, and prevents seizure.
A little blue smoke might be emitted from the exhaust during warm-
up, but normal.

9. Turn the automatic throttle switch ON or OFF according to operation.

When the duty is small (loading power less than 350 W), the automatic
throttle control system might not work. Even above 350 W, it might not
function properly, due to the switch components. In these case set the
automatic throttle switch to OFF.

7. GENERATOR USE

Connections to a Building’s Electrical System

If the generator will be used as an alternative to utility company power,

an isolation switch must be installed to disconnect the utility lines
from the building when the generator is connected. Installation must
be performed by a qualified electrician and must comply with all
applicable laws and electrical codes.

Improper connections to a building’s electrical system can allow

electricity from the generator to backfeed into utility lines and may
cause serious injury or death to utility company workers or others
who contact the lines. Consult the utility company or a qualified
electrician.

Improper connections to a building’s electrical system can allow

electricity from the utility company to backfeed into the generator,
which will severely damage the generator and may cause fires.

In some areas, generators are required by law to be registered with

local utility companies. Check local regulations for proper registration
and use procedures.

Be sure to ground the generator when the connected equipment is

grounded.

GROUND
TERMINAL

32

Limit operation requiring maximum power (see page 50 ) to 30
minutes.
For continuous operation, do not exceed the rated power (see page
50 ).
In either case, the total wattage of all appliances connected must be
considered.
Most appliance motors require more than their rated wattage for
startup.
Do not exceed the current limit specified for any one receptacle.
Do not connect the generator to a household circuit. This could
cause damage to the generator or to electrical appliances in the
house.
When an extension cable is required, be sure to use a tough rubber
sheathed flexible cable (IEC 245 or equivalent).
Limit length of extension cables; 60 m for cables of 1.5 mm and 100
m for cables of 2.5 mm . Long extension cables will lower usable
power due to resistance in the extension cable.
Keep the generator away from other electric cables or wires such as
commercial power supply lines.

33
Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine
AC Applications

Make sure all appliances are in good working order before connecting
them to the generator. If an appliance begins to operate abnormally,
becomes sluggish, or stops suddenly, turn it off immediately.
Disconnect the appliance, and determine whether the problem is due
to an appliance problem, or generator overloading.

Be sure that appliances do not exceed the generator’s rated load

capacity for more than 30 minutes and that they never exceed the
maximum load capacity. Substantial overloading will switch off the
circuit breaker. Marginal overloading may not switch off the circuit
breaker, but it will shorten the service life of the generator.

Most appliance and power tool motors require more than the rated
operating current for start-up. To match appliance power needs to
generator capability, allow enough generator power reserve to
accommodate motor start-up requirements.
An overload will trip (switch off) the circuit breaker. If this happens,
reduce the electrical load on the circuit. Wait a few minutes before
resetting the circuit breaker.

Operation:

1. Start the engine. Makes sure the pilot lamp comes on (Equipped
type only).
2. Make sure that the voltmeter indicates the specified voltage. If not
adjust with the voltage adjustment knob (Equipped type only).
Although voltage adjustment is usually not required, fine
adjustments may be made by turning the voltage adjustment knob.
Use the generator at the specified voltage.

8. MAINTENANCE

Periodic maintenance and adjustment are necessary to keep the

engine in good operating condition. Service and inspect according to
the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.

To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, shut off the engine before

performing any maintenance. If you run the engine in an area that is
confined, or even partially enclosed, the air you breathe could contain
a dangerous amount of exhaust gas. If the engine must be run for any
reason, be sure the area is well-ventilated.

To avoid serious burns, let the engine cool before performing

maintenance.

Use only genuine Honda parts or their equivalent for maintenance and
repair. Parts of lower quality may damage the engine.

weak, causing slow starting or other electrical problems, see your
authorized Honda dealer.
Open the maintenance cover and check the electrolyte level in each
battery cell. Fill the battery with distilled water to the upper level line.
Never overfill the battery.

Batteries produce explosive gases: If ignited, and explosion can cause

serious injury or blindness. Provide adequate ventilation when
charging.
CHEMICAL HAZARD: Battery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid.
Contact with eyes or skin, even through clothing, may cause severe
burns. Wear a faceshield and protective clothing.
Keep flames and sparks away, and do not smoke in the area.
ANTIDOTE: If electrolyte gets into your eyes, flush thoroughly with
warm water for at least 15 minutes and call a physician
immediately.
POISON: Electrolyte is poison.
ANTIDOTE
−External: Flush thoroughly with water.
−Internal: Drink large quantities of water or milk.
