Ensuring Efficiency 7

Quality
Our expertise is mirrored in the way we work.
In more than 115 years of ground engineering experience we have developed numerous
tried-and-tested standards. Definitely the most demanding one: We keep questioning even
long-practiced workflows. For years we have been organising our processes according to
LEAN standards in order to continuously enhance our efficiency and to systematically adapt
our service portfolio to our customers’ demands.

In this context an effective management regarding occupational health and safety as well as
environmental protection is essential. In both fields we have been applying internationally
accepted management systems for years. Hence in 2010 our company was certified by TÜV
Rheinland according to DIN EN ISO 14001 (environmental management) and BS OHSAS
18001 (occupational health and safety management).

Teams of experts
The shortest way from plan to realisation
is a well-seasoned team.

Our employees are good, if not the best in this sector. We are proud of them. And we do a
lot to make them stay and to facilitate both their professional and personal development.

Further together
Our employees’ qualification, motivation and dedication are vital for our success. Hence we
attach great importance to the education and training of all of them, irrespective of their
vocation or age. From industrial or commercial to technical career, from intern or trainee to
professional: Our internal training programmes provide optimal opportunities for lifelong
learning regarding professional, social as well as methodological competencies.

Constructing in a spirit of partnership

A high level of team competence is of cardinal importance at ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering. One
reason is that today’s complex tasks can only be solved with a holistic approach and with
interdisciplinary foresight. Another reason is that the polarity – contractor on the one hand,
client company on the other – has become obsolete. Economical success can only be
guaranteed if projects are regarded as common cause. This attitude is the defining feature of
ZÜBLIN teamconcept – the partnering model we have successfully been practising for more
than 15 years. And our committed employees enthusiastically live up to the ideas manifested
in our teamconcept.

Solutions
Our success is based on yours being firmly anchored.
Our portfolio includes all ground engineering services. In turnkey projects we offer the
complete range of construction services. We carry out ground improvements, build highly-
modern tunnels or complex building pits, construct durable foundation systems and we
even move whole buildings including their foundation if necessary.

Each one of our services is also available as single entity. Moreover we carry out the project
monitoring, work out logistics plans for the machinery or take care of all the infrastructural
requirements of a project.

The prime concern in all our construction services is to provide technically most effective yet
cost-efficient solutions. We strive to avoid any risks and to ensure maximum safety for people
and the environment.

Techniques
Piles
From largest bored piles to micro-piles – we are equipped for all pile foundation methods.
Depending on the subsoil conditions we offer you several economically-efficient alternatives
for heavily loaded foundations. Foundation improvement underneath existing buildings with
limited working heights is available as well. Moreover we utilise our own inspection tools and
we work out reliable optimisation concepts with the help of test piles.

Grout injections
The subsoil can be improved by injecting various environmentally-compatible substances. This
technique results in increased stability, mitigated settlement or reduced water permeability
of the soil. Especially in the latter case, complex and lengthy water rights proceedings as
well as high fees can be avoided, since the ground water is prevented from seeping into the
building pit.

As a leading company in the field of grouting ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering contributes to the
definition of consistent standards, even at European level. We developed our own measuring
and controlling system for compensation grouting to be able to provide our clients with
standardised and auditable reports.

Ground freezing
Artificial ground freezing prevents ground water from seeping into the building pit, which

Realising
is thus stabilised. The freezing of the ground is brought about by pipes inserted into the
ground, with a cooling agent circulating through them. The solidifying and sealing effect of

Visions
the freeze is used, for example, for cross passages in underwater tunnel construction and
in the case of remediation to bind highly volatile hazardous substances in the ground.

Realising Visions 13

Diaphragm walls
Diaphragm walls can be installed in close proximity to existing buildings serving – also in
combination with other methods – as solid retaining walls, as load-bearing foundation
elements or as sealing against groundwater. Diaphragm walls are typically used in urban
locations with difficult subsoil conditions or for landfill sites or complex infrastructure projects.
To be able to meet various individual requirements our portfolio includes all diaphragm
walling techniques.

Retaining walls
We offer several solutions for the construction of building pits where there is not enough space
for a slope and watertightness is not the primary requirement. Depending on your demands
we offer the following types of retaining walls: bored pile walls, reinforced concrete diaphragm
walls, sheet pile walls, soldier pile walls, soil nail walls, element walls, combi walls etc.

Ground anchors
Ground anchors are prestressed tension members made of steel strands or steel bars
installed into mortared boreholes, serving as temporary or permanent means to transfer high
tensile forces into the ground. Ground anchors are used, for example, in pit retaining walls,
to protect buildings against groundwater uplift forces, to secure slopes or to transfer the
reaction forces during pile test loading.

Technologies
Dam sealing
The restoration of leaking dams serves to protect both people and the environment. To
prevent water from seeping through a dyke or dam we employ various techniques. Conventional
in-situ sealing methods include, for example, the use of cement, chemical grouting, cut-off
walls etc.

A novel, very economical and eco-friendly method is the so-called BioSealing. ZÜBLIN
Ground Engineering contributed considerably to paving the way for this innovative technique:
through cooperations with research institutes and as pioneer in its successful utilisation.

Enabling the Impossible 15

Immersed tube tunnels

Tunnels play an important role in developing the national and international transport networks.
Be it because natural obstacles like rivers, mountains or straits need to be overcome; be it
because protected areas or nature reserves can be reached optimally.

ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering is an internationally leading expert on immersed tubes. This

technique is based on prefabricated tunnel or foundation elements made of concrete which
are floated to the tunnel site and sunk into the river or sea bed.

Technologies
Large-scale projects
Large-scale projects with numerous interfaces between several contractors require immense
coordination efforts engendering additional risks. Awarding the realisation of the whole
project to one contractor only is an economical yet advantageous solution allowing you to
minimise such risks.

Especially in highly complex projects schedule coordination and schedule adherence play
a decisive role. The initiation of the contract awarding procedures is only reasonable after
preceding works have been completed. Hence the construction of large building pits including
a foundation slab anchored against uplift forces can bring about significant advantages – not
only temporal ones.

ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering has the necessary operational expertise as well as the required
personnel and equipment capacities – worldwide. Our highly-motivated employees at our
department Zentrale Technik carry out all the planning for projects of any size. This efficient
interlinking of planning and realisation guarantees an optimal project progression.

Specialist fields
With highly-qualified employees and state-of-the-art machinery ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering
is perfectly equipped for special demands. Directional horizontal drilling is an economical yet
environment-friendly way to establish connections over long distances, with the adjoining
terrain remaining unaffected. It is the perfect solution if buildings, waters or special objects
like nature reserves, airports or railway tracks need to be underpassed.

Where cultural monuments are in the way of construction projects they tend to be completely
dis- and then reassembled at another location. Our far more gentle solution: We move the
whole structure on special rails. And we also offer complicated underwater tunnel relocations
as turnkey service.

Innovations
BioSealing
BioSealing is a method to seal subterrestrial leakages in dams, subways, tunnels, building
pits or underground car parks. The technique is based on the deliberate stimulation of
soil bacteria. In a multi-stage process the bacterias’ growth leads to a sustained sealing
of the leakage through clay minerals.

ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering substantially contributes to furthering the development of this

innovative sealing method. BioSealing is an economical and eco-friendly alternative to
conventional techniques like cement suspension or chemical grouting.

Drill-Pilot
The Drill-Pilot is a high-precision measuring tool for directional drilling and remeasurement
of existing drill holes. The Drill-Pilot’s advantage lies in its linkup with our in-house data
collection – providing much more measurement data for navigation. A display imparts real-time
information on the drilling’s progress. Hence the instrument makes redundant a number of
intricate accompanying works quite common to highly demanding projects. Reference holes
or the installation and measurement of magnetic loops are no longer required. The probe
may be used either during the drilling process or for the precise remeasuring of existing holes.
Moreover the Drill-Pilot is insensitive to external influences like magnetic fields or electrical
interference.

Geothermics

future tasks sustainably and with a view to forthcoming generations are increasing. In the quest
for finding alternative energy sources geothermal energy is gaining ever more importance. Its
enormous potential regarding heating, cooling and energy storage currently is being extended
through strong R&D efforts. ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering has a leading role in this field as well.
Our deep hole drilling equipment enables us to carry out exploratory drilling for resources as
well as geothermal well drilling even in great depths.

Preparing the Future 19

Monitoring
Systematic monitoring prior to, during and after a project’s realisation has become an integral
part of all kinds of construction works. Diverse measuring instruments convey data (online)
regarding deformation, subsidence, water ingress, installation parameters etc., with visual
data analysis taking place immediately. This allows our project team to professionally interpret
the data and to consider them in the construction process immediately.

Research and development

The great range of ground engineering tasks, processes and technologies provides an
opportunity to develop novel ideas and ground-breaking innovations. Viewing this challenge
in an integral way offers the chance to influence and shape the developments in other
disciplines as well.

The required cooperations go far beyond the corporate units of ZÜBLIN. Together with our
national and international R&D partners from leading companies, research institutes and
universities we foster and expand important networks. The goal: long-term cooperations in
order to optimise existing solutions and to find novel answers to new questions.
