October/November 2010

November 2010 Cambridge Exam Entries took place in June. Late entries
can still be sent in although penalties are charged by Cambridge as indicated
on the exams notice board. Re-write entries from the June session are not
charged penalties until after 14 September. No entries at all or amendments
to entry will be accepted by Cambridge for Checkpoint and 28 September
for IGCSE and A Level exam entries.
Cambridge Statements of exam entry are to be collected from the Exams
office. Personal MOCK exam timetables are available from the Exams
Office. Students must check the examination notice board where the master
Mock and Cambridge Exam timetables are displayed. Please make regular
checks as any amendments to Cambridge timetables are displayed here only
and in red. It is the students’ responsibility to know the correct dates and

2
times for their exams as a missed exam cannot be made up. Special
consideration applications as a consequence of illness which affects exams
must be supported by a doctor’s note.

Mocks
Students in IGCSE2 and A2 courses should be well into their preparation for
their MOCK exams which begin at the end of the month.

No lectures take place for Foundation, IGCSE 2 and A2 courses during their
Mock examination period as per the calendar. Please note that all
Foundation and IGCSE students are expected to attend their exams in full
school uniform.
Students may not have bags, cell phones or other electronic equipment in the
exam rooms. They may only have pencil and pens etc and clear water bottles
on the desk. They should check the exams notice board to see where they are
seated beforehand. Students may be allowed extra time if they arrive late for
an exam but only for very specific reasons as per the Cambridge rules.
Students are not allowed to leave the exam hall during the last half hour of
the examination session. Parents should arrange collection of the students
approximately 30 minutes after the exam is scheduled to end.

Student cards

A valid student card is to accompany every student to an exam. Please

approach Reception if you need a student card. Students should in any case
carry their student card at all times. It is their permission to be on campus
and if they do not have it they are liable for a R10 fine (for charity).

Reports

Students received their Reports from their Mentors from 13

August 2010 onwards. All new students and their parents
were invited to make an appointment with Mr. Cawdry or
Mrs Oshry to discuss their progress. New students who need
to enter for Cambridge exams should do so as soon as
possible.

If a student was ill and they can produce a doctor’s note or if it was known
in advance (letter from parents to Lulu or Mr. Cawdry) that the student
would not be in class, the student can arrange with the lecturer to catch up

3
the missed class work. Amendments to the results which appear on the
Reports are at the lecturer’s discretion and will only be processed if the error
is the lecturer’s fault.

ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS

Completed Tuition

Students who are continuing with their courses at BIC next year (2011)
should already have submitted subject choice forms during their progress
meetings
We remind you that when you complete your studies, BIC requires three
months written notification prior to the date at which you wish to leave or,
alternatively, three months payment in lieu of notice. If notice is not
received the student continues to be registered and parents are liable for fees.
Students leaving us at the end of 2010 therefore need to inform us in writing
by 1 September 2010.

Enrolment

We are presently interviewing students for 2011 –

siblings and friends of BIC students are offered
preference.
Please inform friends who are interested in attending BIC
next year. They will need to phone to book an enrolment
interview with the Dean or the Director of Studies.

Community Service Hours

The final date for submitting community service hours for certificates is 18
September. After that any additional hours submitted will be captured for
2011.

College hours

Students and parents are reminded that our Foundation and IGCSE hours are
officially 8.15am – 2.00pm. Any student needing to leave campus early
must have an Exit slip. The legal guardian or nominee is required to come to
Reception to sign this form. Exit forms cannot be given to students to give to
their guardians at the front gate. This applies during exam periods too. If you

4
are on Campus during exam periods and you do not have an exam or classes
we expect you to be in the Study Centre studying silently.

College Academic Year

The year ends on 30 November. However, the last event is on 26 November

and College exams continue until this date. Please do not book flights (for
holidays) until after 5pm on this day.

Cash

Parents are reminded that to ensure our security, the College does not accept
cash payments for amounts exceeding R350.

EVENTS WE ENJOYED

Student and Parent Forum: 22 July 2010 IGCSE

Students from IGCSE 2 and parents arrived at the Forum to get insight on
the pressures facing teenagers and the focus was on communication between
teens and their parents. Thank you to all those who attended the Forum and
to Colleen Bloem the guest speaker.

Foundation Formal: 26 July 2010

The Foundation Formal was held at Adega restaurant Bryanston 26 July

2010. The students had a wonderful time enjoying the Portuguese
atmosphere and fare. They were beautifully attired and enjoyed lots of
laughter and photographs together. We thank all the Foundation students and
their Mentor for making this a wonderful evening.

Appreciation of Support Staff Day: 5th August

Students use this day to express their appreciation to our support staff. The
SLC had a charming awards presentation to all those people who work so
tirelessly to make BIC function. These ladies and gentlemen were awarded
small gifts and certificates in recognition of their dedication and hard work.

Inter - Campus Games: 5 August 2010

At 3:30pm BIC Johannesburg hosted the annual Inter-Campus Volleyball

and Soccer games against the Pretoria campus. Some fierce competition led

5
to a few scrapes and bruises but otherwise fun was had by all. The groups of
supporters and watchers added to the ambiance of the day by cheering and
supporting the teams.

Foundation Entrepreneurship Market: 5 August 2010

At 5:30pm the Foundation Business students hosted the Foundation

Entrepreneurship Market. They sold their wares and displayed the goods and
services that they are offering as part of their Foundation Business studies
course. The goods were quickly sold out and the students and parents hurried
up to the Hall for the Talent Show.

Talent Show: 5th August

The BIC “Has got Talent” was held in the evening

after the Inter-Campus Games Day and the
Foundation Market. The show began at 6:30pm and
displayed many of the talents that BIC (JHB) has to
offer. Unfortunately the Pretoria Campus students
did not participate in the talent show this year but
were here to watch. Our excellent DJ (Emmanuel
Kalima) provided music & atmosphere.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Shannon Vorster and Dan
Garden for volunteering their time and passion into making the Talent Show
run so smoothly. They coached and encouraged the acts to be of the highest
quality. Thanks you for your support.

Cuppa for CANSA: 12 August

This was our opportunity to give back to the community! Each of our
Mentor groups hosted a table to put on an International Tea Party. Members
of the community as well as parents, friends and family members of our
students were invited to take part in this drive to raise funds for charity and
to enjoy some great entertainment, courtesy of our students. It was a lovely
event. Thank you to the students, parents and Mentors who put in many
hours baking, decorating and serving.

Calling all A-level students. This is a chance to let your hair down after the
year-end exams and take part in a working holiday, for about two weeks

the warm sea.

RAISING A DRUG – FREE CHILD

Here are some tips from the South African National Council on Alcoholism
and Drug Dependence on how you raise drug- free children:

 Spend as much time with them as you can. Communicate with them
regularly, openly and honestly.

 Always be on the lookout for new behaviours, new items in the room
and so on.

 Make sure you know where your child goes and who will be there. Be
sure to meet the other parents.

 Make sure your child understands the dangers of drugs, even if you
think you should have no possible reason to doubt them.

 Create family times, such as sitting down at the table for a meal or to
play a game. Turn the television off.

9
 Make time for a child function at least once a week when you can
both share a common interest. Play tennis together, see a movie they
would like or take them for a meal.

 Be open-minded and listen to their queries, problems, questions and

interests.

 Praise your child when they do well.

 If you have any more questions regarding substance abuse you can
phone the GEMS cell centre on 0860 00 4367 or visit their website at
www.gems.gov.za
