Account of considerations

This yearly planner is based on the assumption that some math concepts such as

understanding operations are more complex than others, and therefore require more

lessons to demonstrate the flexible repertoire of strategies for finding solutions. This

plan takes into consideration the number of times a concept is visited and the

amount of time allocated for students to practise their mathematical skills to become

competent practitioners. The yearly planner also includes the daily practising of

mental math skills throughout the year with a focus on the four basic operations of

addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The first two terms of school will cover the entire math curriculum. The coverage has

two advantages, firstly, assessments and professional judgements are made early to

determine the differentiated lessons required for students, and secondly, that there is

enough time allocated for the revision of all the math content. Having identified

students who may need specific math tutoring early in the year means they can get

the required help needed to move them through the math diagnostic phases.

The content descriptors and elaborations inform me of the mathematics to be taught

to Year 5 students. The intent then is to flow the lessons in an organised manner to

scaffold and facilitate discussions around the applicable use of ICT, encourage

critical and creative thinking, while developing numeracy and literacy skills. The flow

of content is logically sequenced so students can construct a deeper understanding

of the math provocation and strategies because they can be linked and integrated

into other curriculum areas. A national event such as Mother’s Day or school events

such as sport provides a contextual environment for students to relate the

applicability of the learning. For example, students use financial planning to acquire

materials to make a Mothers Day gift or calculate time and distance run training for

personal best (PB) for interschool sport.

The year planner takes the proficiency strands of understanding, fluency, problem-

solving and reasoning into consideration and is embedded within the content

descriptors of each sub-strand. The aim is to strengthen the mathematical links

within the content to differentiate what is being explored and what is being

developed. As highlighted within the plan, fluency, for example, includes choosing

appropriate units of measurement for calculation of perimeter and area. Therefore,

the content descriptor to best explore and develop that proficiency is choosing

appropriate units of measurement for length, area, volume, capacity and mass

(ACMMG108).

There is a heavy focus on number and measurement concepts as they underpin the

other mathematical strands and quantify the world. Understanding operations is a

fundamental process which sets the students up for further learning especially in the

later years where multiplicative reasoning skills are required. For students to get both

a balance of context and content flow, the five-day week is divided into two parts.

The first three days are allocated to number and algebra and the last two days are

for either measurement and geometry or statistics and probability. Students need to

enjoy learning math, and providing variety keeps their interest during the week.

There is enough range within the math curriculum to provide such a balance

between the three strands of mathematics.

Students need to be confident in taking risks by transferring familiar ideas and known

concepts to solve new problems flexibly, accurately and efficiently. This program

works with the school's events so the mathematics can be hooked into these spaces

throughout the year providing students with context and demonstrating that math is

used in many areas of everyday life as well as outside of school such as gardening,

shopping, budgeting, financial planning, cooking, health and so forth.

Linking other curriculum areas to the math strands strengthens the students'

proficiencies in mathematical terms. It also increases the student's awareness that

maths is not used in isolation of other subjects, math is everywhere.
