Pennsylvania Farm Show
Welcome to the 2018 Pennsylvania Farm Show!
Dear Friends:
The Friends of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Foundation, Inc. exemplifies an important part of
commemorating the theme of the 2018 annual Farm Show, Strength In Our Diversity. Through the
help of our Lifetime Friends, our Annual Friends, Individuals, Agribusiness and other companies, the
Foundation has assisted in providing a means for continued support of celebrating the rich abundance
of Pennsylvania agriculture. The Board of Directors are very pleased and proud to report that funds
expended as of March 31, 2017 have exceeded $682,000.00. These monies have been provided to
the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Farm Show, since the Foundation’s incorporation in 2010 in
support of our Mission Statement, to stimulate, facilitate and support educational programs incentives
and events relating to the annual Pennsylvania Farm Show.
The 2018 annual Pennsylvania Farm Show, in Harrisburg, provides a gathering location to celebrate
the rich diversity of Pennsylvania’s #1 industry, agriculture. Funding provided by the Foundation
enables many of the educational displays and competitions to be made available to the visiting public.
Let us never forget that one of the major strengths of Pennsylvania Agriculture is our 4-H and FFA
youth. Each year hundreds of these outstanding young people are deeply involved with Farm Show
agricultural displays and competitions, further developing their skills to become our Leaders of the
Future!
As we look to the future, and a great celebration of our agricultural heritage, let us never take for
granted the intense effort that individuals, families and companies exemplify each and every day to
produce the food and fiber that helps to sustain this Commonwealth, Nation and World, thus proving
the vast strength of our agricultural diversity.
We are hopeful that this Visitor’s Guide provides you with valuable information that enhances your
educational experience at the 2018 Farm Show. The Foundation sincerely thanks the Visitor’s Guide
advertisers for their involvement and participation since, without their help, this publication would
not be possible.
Thank you for being a friend of the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Enjoy the show!

William L. Piper, Chairman

Ag Careers & Education Day
From first generation farmers to tenth generation
farmers — Pennsylvania agriculture represents new
ventures and lifelong traditions. On Monday, January 8,
we’re highlighting the multitude of careers available in
agriculture, and the pathways that lead to those careers.
It’s important to expose children to the opportunities
available in agriculture at a young age, and what better
place to do it than at Pennsylvania’s annual celebration
of agriculture?

Thursday, January 11, 2018: Veterans,
Military & Their Families Day
Farmers are the 2% of our nation who feed us.
Veterans are the 2% who protect us. On Thursday,
January 11, we will honor those who feed, those who
serve, and those who do both. It’s always a good day to
recognize those who dedicate their lives for our free-
dom! We’re celebrating those who serve all day – we
especially note our Army/Navy Cook-Off on the Culi-
nary Connection stage at 1 PM, and the Homegrown by
Heroes Ceremony, at 2 PM on the same stage, where
we will induct our newest Pennsylvania farmer-veterans
into the state branding program, PA Preferred™.

Local government and agriculture have a long
productive history — and a bright future — working
together! The goal of Wednesday, January 10, Public
Officials Day at the Farm Show, is to further strengthen
the relationship between those in agriculture and those
in government. This day is designed to foster commu-

Every day, new life begins on the farm. At the

2018 Farm Show, visitors can witness the miracle
of birth at the new Calving Corner. Hosted by
the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the
Calving Corner is more than just an opportunity
to share the miracle of life. Visitors will get an
in-depth look at the care and stewardship farm-
ers invest in the health and well-being of their
animals.
The dairy cow birthing center provides a
unique platform for farm families and agricultural
representatives to interact directly with families
visiting the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Farmers,
volunteers, veterinarians and college interns will
answer questions, explain the calving process,
and describe how the people in the dairy in-
dustry work each day to ensure that the dairy
products on store shelves are healthy, safe, and
nutritious. Our hope is that these conversations
will build and strengthen relationships between
consumers and the people who produce their
food.
In addition to the cows and their newborn
calves, interactive learning stations, including
“Susan” the mechanical milking cow, will be
featured at the Calving Corner.
Each participating farm will send four cows
that will give birth during the week, providing
the public with the opportunity to witness the
birth of a calf. The cows and calves will receive
‘round-the-clock care from onsite herdspersons, veteri- lence, American Dairy Association North East, and
narians and farmers. the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The Land

Or someone wearing this.

If you see this.

Go ahead. Ask what they do. You’re likely to hear as many wildly different stories as you’ll see wildly
different breeds of chickens in the poultry exhibit… and some of them equally as surprising.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture encourages, protects, and promotes agriculture and
related industries throughout the commonwealth, while providing consumer protection through
inspection services that impact the health and financial security of Pennsylvania’s citizens.

That’s our mission. And it takes a tremendous diversity of careers, jobs, educational backgrounds, and
talented, hardworking people to fulfill that mission.
We are 15 bureaus and offices with 28 divisions; 32 commissions, boards and advisory committees. We
are 560 full-time, year-round people with 160 different job titles, working across the state in Harrisburg,
12 satellite administrative offices, 2 veterinary labs, the Livestock Evaluation Center and the PA Farm Show
Complex. Seasonal workers add 590 more to our family. We are accountants, administrators, bee keepers,
botanists, conservationists, dog wardens, educators, entomologists, farm managers, food scientists, food
safety inspectors, foresters, lab techs, maintenance workers, marketers, planners, policy specialists, ride
safety inspectors, writers, veterinarians, and the list goes on and on.
Pennsylvania’s 58,000 farm families are stewards of more than 7.7 million acres of farmland. With
$74.5 billion in sales in the agriculture and food industry from farm to fork, Pennsylvania farmers and
agribusinesses drive our state’s economy.
The people of the PA Department of Agriculture are devoted to supporting those producers, farmers, and
consumers who drive our economy.
We are ALL PA Agriculture. Ask us how!

Pennsylvania Farm Show
ƙȻȯɈȷȼȵΎƜȳȲȷȱȯɂȷȽȼ
The annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is held in
January in the heart of winter. Despite challenges
like ice, snow and cold temperatures, the Farm
Show is one of the largest and most successful
indoor agriculture shows in America.
That success is largely due to our many volun-
teers and the staff members at the Pennsylvania
Farm Show Complex and Expo Center. They are
all eager to make sure that you will enjoy a won-
derful experience at the 2018 Pennsylvania Farm
Show.
Nearly 2,900 volunteers will assist in this year’s
event. Volunteers represent almost every one
of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, plus the states of
Florida, Maryland and Ohio. Many of them arrive
on Wednesday before the eight-day show and

don’t leave until the day after the show closes.
Volunteers answer questions at the information
booth and the Penn State University booth. Volun-
teers in Family Living and Farm Products accept
entries, assist judges and display winning exhibits.
Volunteers organize the animal shows, run the
horse and pony pulls, operate the carousel and sell
tickets. They prepare delicious food in the famous
Food Court, which is an annual taste touchstone.
All 18 commodity food booths are non-profit or-
ganizations that reinvest their proceeds back into
Pennsylvania agriculture.
Farm Show Complex and Expo Center employees
also perform key roles.
The Administrative Office’s staff oversees entries,
coordinates judges and manages the many details
of a jam-packed Farm Show schedule. The Security
Department’s staff meets you upon arrival, provides
parking and traffic control, and safeguards the facil-
ity.
The Boiler Room’s staff keeps the complex warm
and comfortable. The Electrical Department’s staff
supplies power that serves patrons, exhibitors and
vendors. The Maintenance Office’s staff handles
event and stall setups, maintains cleanliness and
disposes trash.
Our volunteers and staff members are essential in
making the Farm Show a premier event.
We profoundly thank them for doing an amazing
job. Their commitment and passion are deeply ap-
preciated by everybody in the commonwealth.
