TACA Fall Picnic

Saturday, October 2nd
Because of construction at St. Richard’s we have been forced to move our picnic up
a bit this year. Mark your calendars for the annual Fall Social on October 2nd at
5pm. It’s in the fellowship hall at St. Richard’s Church, 5151 Lake Howell Road
(same place where you go to vote). TACA provides hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken,
chips, soda and ice cream treats. Please bring a side dish or a dessert. Returning
this year will be the Seminole County Sheriffs Office robot to entertain kids and an-
swer questions. Also there will be door prizes provided by area merchants and elec-
tion of TACA officers for 2011. The dinner is free for TACA members or $10 per
family for non-TACA members

Fall Yard Sale -Friday/Saturday Oct. 8th & 9th

Start setting cleaning those garages and closets and get ready for the semi-annual
TACA yard sale Oct. 8-9. We’ll take care of the advertising. Here are some tips for a
successful sale: start now going through closets, drawers, kids toy boxes and set things
aside. Stock up on grocery sacks and newspapers to wrap purchased items. Wash and
clean everything. Keep like things together: toys, kitchen stuff, hand tools, electron-
ics, linens. Put items too small for a price sticker in zip-lock bags. If selling books or
CD’s arrange them so the titles can be read easily. Put some interesting items at the
end or your driveway to entice the “drive-by” shoppers to stop. If you are selling elec-
trical appliances, have an extension cord handy. As for pricing, price things realistically. Give folks a bar-
gain but don’t give things away. If in doubt about an item’s value, check out similar objects on websites
like ebay. Make it easy and price things in even amounts like .25, .50, $1 and have coins and small bills
available. A calculator can come in handy. Yard sales are more relaxing if you have some background mu-
sic playing and allows folks to discuss potential purchases without having to whisper. Lastly, consider hav-
ing a large box marked “Free for kids only” filed with miscellaneous items, kids meal toys, crayons, bal-
loons, etc. to keep kids busy while mom or dad shop your sale.

Your Good Health from Dr. Paul Ziajka

Cholesterol: good versus bad

In the last issue you learned that cholesterol was important

for your cells to function optimally but that too much causes a build
up in your arteries called atherosclerosis leading to heart attacks and
strokes. But, you’ve likely heard about ‘good’ cholesterol and ‘bad’
cholesterol. Is there a difference? Yes and realizing this difference is
important for optimal heart health.
For years, doctors looked only at one number: your total cholesterol.
Total cholesterol below 200 was good and more than 200 was bad. But in the 1980’s medicine
refined the lipid profile to distinguish between two different kinds. Now, when talking about
‘cholesterol’ experts differentiate between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and low-
density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL).
To understand the importance of HDL and LDL you first should know that your body
packages cholesterol into transport vehicles called lipoproteins. These lipoproteins are like mi-
croscopic water balloons filled with a varying mixture of cholesterol and triglycerides.
LDL is the transport vehicle that delivers cholesterol from the liver to other tis-
sues. Some LDL is essential for good health because organs like the adrenal glands and ovaries
can not make enough of their own cholesterol to produce necessary hormones. It’s generally be-
lieved that an LDL level of 40 to 70 allows for optimal cell function. The problem is that the av-
erage American’s LDL level is in the 160’s. That extra cholesterol is delivered directly to the
walls of your arteries causing atherosclerosis. Hence the popular term for LDL – “the bad choles-
terol”.
The body also makes lipoproteins that try to reverse the atherosclerotic process
and clean out clogged arteries. HDL is made in the liver and small intestine and is designed to go
to the artery wall and remove the deposited cholesterol – a process referred to as reverse transport.
Thus, HDL is popularly called “the good cholesterol” and its level should be above 45.
As a general rule, most people would benefit from being a member of the 50-50
club with both LDL and HDL levels being 50. Or it might be easier to remember “L” for low and
“H’’ for high i.e. aim for a low LDL (below 50) and a high HDL (above 50).
In the next issue I’ll discuss cholesterol testing.

TACA resident Dr. Paul Ziajka is director of the Florida Lipid Institute in Winter Park that specializes in
the treatment of cholesterol and triglyceride disorders. For more information check out
