University Position Title: Principal Information Technology Specialist- ATLAS


Primary Position Function/Summary:
The Principal Information Technology Specialist (ITS), while using independent judgment, will provide computer technology
support and services for Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts and Sciences (ATLAS). This position provides computer
technology support for academic, research, and administrative employees in a team environment. The Principal ITS will work
directly with departmental staff and ATLAS Zone managers to plan, research, procure, and install computing hardware and
software, as well as provide troubleshooting services and maintenance for all computer systems. The Principal ITS will assist
research groups with specific research computing needs, including data security and specialized software. Additionally, the
Principal ITS is involved in project management and will supervise and manage staff.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Support•Provide technical support for computer systems used by faculty, staff, and students, including system
administration, network configuration, security incident response, printing, application software support, and user
training•Troubleshoot all technological issues with computers, printers, multi-function copiers, application software, and system
software; Centrally manage computer systems, computer classrooms, and related technologies in accordance with university
security and IT policies and industry best practices•Install Windows and Macintosh software and hardware; Manage customized
and reproducible installations over a large number of managed Windows and Macintosh computers in a higher education
environment •Maintain and troubleshoot hardware in research experimental use that interacts and integrates with supported
computer systems •Provide computing and communications device support•Maintain accurate inventory of computer resources
within unit; Generate reports from inventory for planning and budgeting for replacements and upgrades. •Administer network
using centrally provided toolset; Coordinate telecom and networking installations based on technical need; Manage DNS
records and allocated IP space•Specify, procure, install, and support computer hardware and software•Interact with sensitive,
unpublished, and/or copyrighted research data in accordance within proper university intellectual property protocols; Work with
other university research groups to ensure compliance with research and IRB regulations•Communicate and enforce standards
for use, and security of networks, computers, and data. •Work evening and weekend hours as needed •Assist the unit with
planning and researching the procurement and installation of IT systems and product.Project Management/Process
Improvement•Lead projects and initiatives which includes setting timelines and goals, assigning tasks, and reviewing progress
and working as a team.•Work with the Coordinator of ITS and Director of Technical Services to analyze the needs of LAS units
for the development of new information systems and process improvement•Facilitates coordination across teams to accomplish
project and initiative goals•Leads communication efforts internally and externally for projects and initiatives•Collaborate with
other IT professionals when needed to assist in the development of IT solutions by serving on committees when
appropriateSupervisory & Management•Participate in the development and monitoring of information systems policies and
procedures•Supervises and trains staff to troubleshoot and resolve problems and insure smooth day-to-day
operations•Participates in the selection, development, and evaluation of staff•Participates in developing and monitoring
operational and budget processes, staff assignments, and space planning•Coordinate activities and interactions between staff
and assigned units•Recommends hiring of new employees and performance ratings of current employees.

Position Requirements and Qualifications
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degreePreferred: Master’s degree, preferably in a technical field such as Computer Science
Experience:
Required: 10 years of experience in technical support; 5 years of it working in a higher education, government, or nonprofit
environment •Technical skill with most of the following concepts: RAID, server virtualization, desktop virtualization, networking
(OSI Model), IT security, OS imaging, Active Directory, GPOs, and MS Office•Proven ability in the administration of Microsoft
Active Directory and/or LDAP•In-depth knowledge of current Windows or Macintosh operating systems and proficiency
diagnosing common issues in a managed Active Directory environment•Basic knowledge of network concepts like routing,
switching, and wireless technologies•Understanding of common network services such as DNS, DHCP, and VoIP•Basic
knowledge of security concepts like access control, authentication, and authorization•Independent problem solving skills and an
ability to fully diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues•Ability to learn new tools and techniques to integrate new
technology•Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication•Self-motivated and able to work and
prioritize without supervision on daily tasks and projects•Experience with leading projects or initiatives and ability to understand
and execute project methodologies, project tracking, communication and documentation•Basic knowledge of application
analysis and service evaluation•Experience in a supervisory role which can include hiring, tasking and evaluating resources,
performance evaluations, and budgeting.Preferred Qualifications•Project management certification•7 years of experience
working at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign supporting information technology•2 years of experience managing
small technical teams•Previous or current participation with campus-level IT initiatives or projects •Experience automating tasks
in large-scale Windows deployment environments•Experience configuring and supporting a thin client environment or a
virtualized computing environment (virtualized client side or server side)
