MINOR IN FRENCH
Prerequisites for the Minor are:

+Prerequisite: B in FREN 2401

N.B. FREN 1599 Introduction to Literature in French is required as a prerequisite for all Literature
courses.
MINOR IN SPANISH
Prerequisites for the Minor are:

SPAN 1001 & SPAN 1002 Spanish Language I 6

Only if you want literature included in your minor.*

The Minor shall consist of 15 credits at the upper level (at least 6 credits at Level III) as follows:
For those not including literature must include:
SPAN2001 & SPAN2002 Spanish Language II 6
SPAN3001 & SPAN3002 Spanish Language III 6
AND at least one other upper level course (SPAN2202, SPAN3502, SPAN3504, SPAN3505)
* Literature students have the option of taking two level II and two level III Literature courses and any
other level II/III course.

DEFINITIONS OF KEY TERMS


Credits/Credit Hrs: The University’s way of measuring work towards a degree. To graduate, a student
must complete a minimum number of credits/credit hours.
Most courses will have a weighting of three (3) credits normally, except for some Faculty courses
whose weighting varies between 1 and 6.
Minor: A specific number of credits (usually 15 or 18) including prescribed courses from Levels II and III
from a single discipline.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Pre-requisites?
To enter the French/Spanish minor programme, students must fulfil the requirements of CAPE Units 1
and 2 in French/ Spanish or equivalent, or show proficiency equivalent to two years of tertiary
(college) level French/Spanish.
Why would you pursue a minor in Spanish or French?
Because you are pursuing a degree in a different discipline and you may want to enhance your career
opportunity. Many other reasons can be identified: heritage, business, offers you the linguistic
confidence needed for studying in another country, prepares you for the demands (foreign language) of
graduate school, makes you proficient in Spanish or French, gives you the benefits of being exposed to
other cultures etc. or you just want to make yourself more marketable.
How many minors can I pursue simultaneously?
Once you have decided what major you will pursue, you have the option to include in your degree up
to two minors.
Can I combine my major with Modern Language minors?
If your major is not French or Spanish but it is in a different discipline such as Education, Accounting,
International Relations Studies, Communication, Cultural Studies, Agriculture, Gender Studies,
Management, Social Work, Linguistics, Engineering, Literature, International Tourism, Economics,
History, Behavioural Sciences, Hotel Management, etc. You can combine your degree with a minor in
French or Spanish (and soon Brazilian Studies).
Do you need to include Hispanic literature in you Spanish minor?
No. Only if you want literature included in your minor.
What can a minor offer me?
A Minor in Spanish or French offers a wide variety of courses in varied areas such as French literature,
Latin American literature, Peninsular literature, business, writing and culture.
What else?
The University of the West Indies offers a great variety of possibilities when it comes to designing
your degree. To earn a minor in French or Spanish, we require that the student attains a level of
competency to be able to use French or Spanish in a variety of settings.
Upper level courses offered can help you attain a good level in conversational as well as become
proficient in written French or Spanish. Literature and other courses such as Translation are ideal in
sensitizing you to cultural issues and the oftentimes subtle nuances of the target language.
Can I take part in study abroad?
Study abroad is not required at the UWI. However, we strongly encourage it. Study abroad is open to
students who are pursuing a minor in French or Spanish.
